I was so excited to find out today that my Kmart will be participating in a double coupon event this week (Feb 22-28)!
Now for a little confession…prior to last November, I had no clue what having coupons doubled meant. But I caught on quickly! To put it simply, when coupons are doubled, it means you get twice the face value of the coupon on your purchase. So your $1 off coupon is now going to save you $2. In my neck of the woods (greater Seattle area), coupons are generally not doubled at stores. So when a store such as Kmart holds a "double coupon event," it's big news. Well, at least to those of us who enjoy using coupons anyways.
If you've never participated (and even if you have), here is a quick rundown of the rules:
- Kmart will double manufacturer's coupons up to a set dollar limit. The stores in my area are currently doubling up to $2. Be sure to check the ciruclar for your zip code to see if your store is participating, and if so, what that dollar limit is.
- The coupons will double automatically at the cash register. There is nothing special you need to do or say.
- The limit is 25 coupons per customer, per day.
- You may not buy more than 4 of any one item.
- Internet coupons and store coupons are not eligible.
- If the coupon reads "do not double" at the top, it is a no-go.
- You will not receive overage if the coupon doubled exceeds the price of the item. For instance, if an item is $3.50 and your coupon is for $2 off, it will take $3.50 off, not $4.
- Coupons exceeding the set dollar amount will not double. If I attempt to use a $3 coupon on an item, it won't give me $5 off, only $3.
- If your state has sales tax, yup, you have to pay it, even if your item comes up as free after coupons.
I'm going to head out to my local Kmart tomorrow and see what I can find to share with you. Oh, and if you happen to be there and see a gal with a massive purple binder, hot pink calculator, and an adorable baby girl wandering through the aisles, say "hi," it's probably me.

I shop at Kmart at least once/week, since it’s the closest big box store. I got excited about the double coupon sale, but alas, our stores aren’t participating

Thank you for sharing that, Christina! Yes, unfortunately this is one of those sales that appears to be very regional. I’ve also heard that the dollar limit they double up to varies…some stores it’s $1, others as much as $3. I’m going to post my finds later today, but don’t worry, you didn’t miss too much this time around!
The doubling up to $2 coupons (for $4 total) was made available in PA this week. Rarely do I get a K-Mart ad in my paper, and was surprised to see this! Went over today, stocked up on things like body wash, shampoo, TP, razors, etc. My total BC (before coupons…) was $123.98. My total afterwards was $36.71, an $87.27 savings. I think I’m going to scrounge around for more coupons (our library has piles to look through) to get more freebies and cheapies!
Wonderful! Here’s another tip for you if you plan to make another trip out. If your area puts out the Sunday paper on Saturday (“Sunday Advance”) you might wish to pick it up and head right over to Kmart since that will be the last day of their sale. You might be able to snag up some last-minute finds! Some sites put up coupon previews by Thurs or Fri, so you would know ahead of time if there’s anything worth doubling.
