How do you find the deals? Part IV

If you haven't read the other posts in this series, you can find them here, here, and here!

Today I'm going to discuss the fourth way I find deal: signing up for mail and email lists.  If you are cringing at the thought of junk mail and spam, humor me for a few minutes before dismissing the idea entirely.  Like many,  I used to "opt out" of every mailing list I could.  After all, why do I need more mail, right?  But as I started to coupon, I realized that valuable money-saving offers could be had by mail.

As I see it, junk mail is mail you receive that you did not ask for and that serves you no use.  On the other hand, when you specifically request mail from companies that matter to you, now you are being a smart consumer!    Many companies will happily mail you coupons to use their products just by asking.  Plus, you might receive news of sales, promotions, and other offers the general public knows nothing about.

Here are just a few scenarios when this method of deal-seeking might come in particularly handy:

  • You are loyal to a brand or product that doesn't put out coupons regularly
  • You frequent and/or prefer a particular store (clothing, retail, grocery)
  • You are expecting a baby and would appreciate offers and coupons to help get you started
  • You buy large quantities of certain items and extra coupons would be helpful

On a near-daily basis, I find all sorts of goodies in my mailbox.  Here's what arrived last week alone:

  • FREE copy Martha Stewart Living and Woman's Day magazines
  • FREE tomato seeds
  • Coupons from SC Johnson, including FREE Glade Soy Candle (up to $6 value)
  • Coupon for FREE Kashi entree
  • $8 in rebate money from Orajel
  • 2 FREE Vaseline Intensive Care samples and 2 $1.50-off-1 coupons
  • Babies R' Us newsletter with lots of coupons

I now look forward to checking the mailbox every day!  I never know what fun stuff I'm going to find in there next.  I also subscribe to a few email lists, as well.  One easy tip is to create an email account for just these type of offers in case you would like to prevent the offers from cluttering up your primary email's inbox.

In spite of this, you might still hesitate to give out your address and/or email.  That's perfectly fine; you have to do what you personally feel comfortable with.  But I can attest that calling up manufacturers and retailers that interest me and subscribing to their mailing lists has saved me some serious cash over the past few months – and yielded me some fun treats, too!

Tomorrow I'll wrap up this mini-series with the fifth and final way I find the deals – friends and family!

Hey there, last night i decided that my old email acct that had turned into the “junk/spam” email was going to be my new coupon email. I cleaned it all out, scheduled spam cleanouts and filtered specific emails to go directly to trash. This took so much time!! but alas, I now have an email ready for signups, deals and all couponing! Thank you so much for all your time invested!!!
