Vent: Safeway “Super Coupons” are anything but super

Dear Safeway,

Week after week I see the in-ad coupons you've titled "Super Coupons."  As an avid couponer, I'm here to tell you that these coupons are anything but super and in fact miss the mark entirely.  Here's why.

1. Your coupons require me to spend $20 to even use them.  This is ridiculous.  A few months ago, they required a minimum purchase of $10.  That was ridiculous too.  But $20?  What are you thinking?  Don't you understand the goal of a couponer is to minimize out-of-pocket expenses?  So I have to spend $20 to get a tube of toothpaste for $1?  In essence, that $1 toothpaste is costing me $21.  Couponers are smarter than that.  Trust that good coupons will bring in foot traffic and result in more sales naturally for your store.  Just don't mandate it.

2. Your coupons limit me to 1.  Again, you are out of touch, Safeway Marketing Team.  Couponers understand the need to stockpile when they find a good sale.  Your coupons prohibit us from taking advantage.

Bottom line, I think you'd do best to simply drop these coupons.  In my opinion, they hurt your image, not help it.  They promote you as being coupon-unfriendly and out of touch with frugal shoppers.

Sincerely,

Angela @ The Coupon Project

I’ve had some serious problems with Safeway & coupons myself. One store told me that they wouldn’t honor any internet-printed coupons, but go on the safeway.com website & they offer coupons to print & bring into the store. What’s up with that? You bet they heard from me! I wasn’t happy with their response and am so frustrated with their policies! Grrr….

Yes! I have been feeling the same way about Safeway the past month and have not been shopping there because of it.

I had a great coupon deal that used some computer printed coupons and her register wouldn’t read it. She told me they are not to use those coupons if the register can’t read it. That’s crazy as all the other stores will type in the code instead.

Its sad, as I have also had some VERY nice cashiers help me there and it is close to my house, but the deal have not been very good lately.

Safeway has been kind of hit-or-miss for me. I prefer Albertsons by a landslide, but sometimes I’ll head over for a particular deal, like the Breyer’s ice cream last week.

I just do not get why they offer these dumb coupons. BY saying you have to spend $20 to use them and then setting a limit of 1, it sends the message that they don’t really want folks using coupons at their stores.
