Readers, you are NOT going to believe how much I spent today…

I haven’t been this tired since before my Costco membership expired. I seriously came from the store and collapsed with post-shopping fatigue.

As I mentioned this morning, I decided to hit up Winco for a massive grocery trip today. I have a freezer meal swap coming up, and I wanted to stock up on some items we typically move through quicker in a month. After today’s shop, I hope to avoid another similar trip for at least a month!

The shocking total: I spent $175 today. Yes, I did. However, I’d yet to do a decent shopping trip this month. Plus, I have a few writing projects coming up that are about to keep me VERY busy. Hence, I will not want to be out and about shopping. So hopefully today’s efforts will pay off to save me time and money in the long run!

I bought an obnoxious spread of items today. Here’s my loot:

Jan19

This was rather challenging to photograph, so I did my best for you. In the lefthand corner is $55 worth of meat (purchased at Safeway…sorry, not a Winco meat fan) that is going to be burritoed and casseroled.

I’m also VERY excited to announce that you’re going to start seeing and hearing more from my husband, Terry, on this blog! Tonight he’ll be whipping up some freezer burritos and he’s agreed to photograph and share how he does it.  I can’t wait to show you how we’re about to streeeetttccchhhh this food into many meals!

While I did spend a rather obnoxious amount of money on food today, there were a few Winco deals I wanted to be sure to come back and share with you. Prices are as of today at the Federal Way, WA store:

It’s so hard to spend that much money isn’t it. I remember when I use to spend that each week and think nothing of it, but now it’s so hard. I’m anxious to see how long you can stretch it. I’ve taken to breaking down my loafs of bread and freezing it in ziploc bags and I even cut up some green pepper and froze them. My husband can’t beleive how thifty I’m becoming. It’s fun to me!!!

Thanks for posting this! Everyone needs to remember that you still need to have a large stock up trip every now and then. The trick is not to do it every week!

Carolyne, boy was I eating humble pie about that free milk!! Yesterday I was thinking, “sheesh..who spends $100 anymore?” and then there I was at the store, over $100 in a transaction and NO free milk coupon. Oh well…live and learn!! ;)

Tamara, I just told Terry what you wrote! He had me pick up an interesting smattering of ingredients today, so I’ll be curious to see how his culinary inspirations play out! ;) I’ll probably have something up from him by the end of the week.

It’s been a long, long time since I did a grocery run like yours, but thanks for reminding us all that sometimes it’s okay to spend a lot in one trip.

That might be a huge amount to spend in one day for you, but with 13 children to feed, that is a pretty normal amount for me. On Monday I shopped at Safeway (two back to back transactions), Albertson’s, Danielsons (Oregon City’s “Thriftway” store), and Fred Meyer and I too get that post shopping fatigue syndrome:PSFS.

I also learned a new lesson about the importance of preserving our stock pile: We hosted a family of 12 in our home for 5 weeks (long story, but it had to do with trying low elevation for their son with a major heart defect – as they live in CO at a high elevation). And while the family helped out with grocery expenses, I unwittingly used what I had in my stockpile without thinking it through. Now, my stockpile is completely wiped out and most of those items are not going to be at stock up prices for a while. While we were happy to help out our friends, I should have thought it through better and had them buy things we needed to eat while they were here instead of wiping out my stockpile. Does that make sense? Not trying to be a scrooge here, just realistic.

Anyone else learn this the hard way?

It looks like you will be stocked up for a long time. I’ve already been shopping twice this week at 4 different stores. Sometimes it’s nice to do it all at once!

Angela – I have totally been there more times that you know. But like you always say, no sense in losing sleep over $2!

Jerri – Yes I have had this happen (over Christmas time). I stockpiled for that reason and then had to pay some full prices the next month. Fortunately, stockpiling only takes a couple of months and like you said you helped a family in need. A service really unmeasurable. God is so good to provide and thank goodness for your giving heart to have the ability to help in this way.

I just spent $200 at Albertson’s yesterday. HOWEVER…I also saved almost $200 also with my coupons and bonus buys. I decided to stock up on chicken and try this freezer cooking you’ve been talking about. I was cooking until 11:00 last night and made about 16 freezer meals. I feel very accomplished :) Even if I just spent a huge wad at the grocery store. But my cart was overflowing and I even had to use a second cart. So I don’t feel to guilty.
