Walgreens deals 2/7 – 2/13

Walgreens_logo1

This is a particularly GREAT ad and I hope you take the time to look through it and bring it with you to the store. Why? Because this ad encourages you to use coupons. I'm not kidding. Check out the top of page 8 – the top headline reads "Use your P&G brandSAVER coupons with these Walgreens offers!" Then it proceeds to list Register Reward deals, sales, and store coupons! I also liked the store coupon on page 16 for $4 off Digesitve Relief. RIGHT ON the store coupon it reads "Coupon savings in most Sunday papers!"

This would be a great ad to bring with you in case you have any difficulties at checkout.

Filler Item Ideas
As a reminder, you MUST have at least as many items in your transaction as coupons – and this includes Register Rewards. If you are heading to checkout with 4 items, and have 4 coupons and a Register Reward, you'll encounter problems. To remedy, buy a small "filler item" to make your transaction process. Walgreens coupons do not count. Here are my picks this week:

  • Encore Gourmet Spices $0.50 each with in-ad coupon (limit 4)
  • Disney Coloring & Activity Pad $0.33 each with in-ad coupon (limit 6)
  • Valentine pencils $0.20 each wtih in-ad coupon (limit 10)
  • Walgreens First Aid – epsom salt/hydrogen peroxide $0.50 each with in-ad coupon (limit 4)

About the Huggies Coloring book coupon, I never even noticed that it said that on it, but I did use it a couple of months ago with no problems. Actually, all the coupons say that, but I’ve read many blogs with people not having any problems using them along with other coupons. Of course, every cashier is different along with every store, so some may not take it. I’m not saying it will work 100%, but I’m saying it is worth a try to ask a manager or the cashier before using it just to make sure it’s okay with them.

Actually, all Walgreens coupons do not say “off regular retail.” I just pulled out the Jan coupon book and the ad coupons to confirm this. The Coloring Book coupons are different. Please take a look – and you’ll see what I’m getting at here.

In the past, I’ve done these deals myself. But I recently noticed the language and read about stores not accepting them on sales for that very reason. I believe that the intention of these coupons is to save on “regular retail” – not sale prices.

You will notice many other bloggers do things differently than I do. I take a VERY conservative stance around here – it’s just the way I roll. Because of this, my deals frequently differ from other bloggers. And that’s OK! ;)

That being said, I absolutely think it wise to speak to a store manager – and encourage you to do so!! Most Walgreen stores take their own unique stance when it comes to coupons. It could be quite possible you’ll find a store willing to take your coupon – and if so, great – you can proceed knowing you’ve been given the green light. But across the board? I have heard stores NOT take them on sales and I have heard of them beeping and not working at all. I also think the coupon as stated is clear enough for me to not include it on this deal.

I know this was a rather long response, but you bring up some good points here, and provided a good opportunity for me to clarify my stance. Good luck with your transaction! Either way, the Huggies works out to a very sweet deal!!
Thanks, Marci!!

Angela,
Thank you for clearing that up. It seems like you mean that just because a cashier may allow this type of transaction to happen, it does not necessarily mean the store policy (or manager by default) would approve/condone that use of the coupon. Checking with the manager is a great idea. You very diplomatically implied that just because you might be able to get away with it doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do. If the coupon clearly states something, it hits my conscience to try to manipulate the system. I understand that to be similar to stealing, as I am sure many stores/companies would. With all the wonderful deals out there, why cheat for pennies?

I worded this strongly. Please feel free to delete. :-)

Well, I hope I didn’t come across as wanting to steal or cheat! I even said checking with the store manager would be a wise idea! I think it is unfair to accuse me of that “H”. That’s not what my intention is or ever has been. Also, in my earlier post I was referring to all the coupons in the Coloring book that say “Off regular Retail”, not all Walgreen’s coupons, sorry if that was confusing.

I follow the rules as much as anyone, for instance, when Angela posted about the salsa, I quickly threw those coupons away. I NEVER want to walk away thinking I was stealing something just to save a few dollars. Plus, with this particular Huggies deal, it’s only $1!!! Not that big of a deal! I was just saying that my particular Walgreen’s let me use it and in that instance, I didn’t even realize it said that on the coupon. Anyways, I love your site and love that it is ethical and follows all the coupon rules. I don’t want to debate this or ever wanted to, I was just implying that some store managers may allow you to use the coupon, just like they allow me to do multiple transactions at Albertson’s when using doublers. It can be up to the store to interpret.

Anywhoo—I’m not here to tell people to cheat the couponing system! I try to glorify the Lord in how I spend my money and honor my family and spend wisely. I would never try to cheat the system just to save a $1. Hope that was clear. Thanks Angela for all you do!

Thanks for writing again, Marci! ;) First off, I sincerely apologize if my response came across as harsh. My intention is certainly to NOT accuse anyone of stealing, and I am so sorry if that’s what you took from this. I certainly didn’t intend to cause a stir, or debate either. Sometimes I wish I could gather everyone in a room and chat these things out over a cup of coffee…nonverbal communication unfortunately has its limits. ;)

As mentioned, in the past, I have used these coupons on the deals. It was only recently I made the discovery of the fine print. They have worked for me in the past. And I think it’s pretty subtle – and would be incredibly easy to miss. Obviously, I did!

If I truly felt anyone was advocating something intentionally wrong (i.e., stealing) I would email personally, and not leave a comment. Know that I didn’t feel that’s what your intention was at all. ;)

Sometimes there are matters that are “gray,” and my goal is to NOT judge in those areas – do what your conscience (and store manager!) guides. My goal is to always play it as safe as possible. I want the majority of my readers to do the majority of the deals I post.

I hope that makes sense. If I have caused offense in any way, please email me at (thecouponproject at hotmail dot com) so I can make it right. My goal is to describe how I personally would do these deals – how they personally seem “correct” to me. Your opinion and take on it may differ, and that is OK!

Thanks Marci and H for your comments! And thanks for hanging with me as I sort through these complicated topics. It’s not been easy, but it’s definitely been engaging. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

Angela-In no way was I taking your comments as accusing me of stealing. I gathered that from the other comment left. I always go to your site because I know that you take the time to put up ethical couponing scenarios. I love your site and have no intention of leaving it. Appreciate your kind words. Also, I appreciate your attention to detail! You have been able to save me a lot of headache at the cashier b/c I know I’m doing the “right” when I coupon. Keep up the good work!

Hi Angela, I’m one of “those bloggers” that posted the deal using the $1 coupon from The Children’s Activity Book. When I did so I didn’t realize the fine print said “Off Regular Retail”. In fact, I did the deal Sunday and didn’t notice this either.

It wasn’t until I read you Wag’s post that I took a closer look at the coupon. I’ve since written a post to correct this.

I thought you might also like to know that my Walgreens is not accepting the Huggies coupon from the Safeway MF coupon booklet either. It beeps and won’t go through. Other stores may use their own discretion with this coupon.

Thanks for your diligence!

Just wanted to let you know that the Huggies deal at Walgreen’s rolled for me. I ended up with 3 $3 RR’s!!!! I also did the Pamper’s deal at Rite Aid, so I think I’m stocked up on diapers for at least a month (wish it were longer!)
