After writing my post several days ago about why I’m choosing to grow a vegetable garden, I got a number of wonderful comments, emails, and remarks. I wanted to share some of these with you today.
I also want to say how much I truly appreciate you taking the time out of your day to drop a line, share your words of wisdom, or encouragement. It has meant so much, and I hope you will continue to do so!
Karen Lynn writes:
Every year, we make a family outing to the nursery. Everyone pitches in with the planning, deciding on what we loved from last year, and what we want more/less of. We have scrapbook pages each year with photos of the planning/purchasing, planting, and harvesting of our garden. It’s quite the family affair! (One of her pages is pictured above.) Our kids understand where their food comes from! We’ve traveled to Kansas to participate in wheat harvest on the family farm, and growing our own garden helps them understand that ultimately, our food comes from the Lord, not Safeway. When I got married (I’m ashamed to admit), the only green things I ate were pickles and japalenos. Now, the veggies are the first things I devour on my plate!
Julie:
…our 4-year old loves to search for snacks in the garden. There’s something so satisfying in being able to provide for your family in this way.
Angelina:
Watching Food, Inc. 2 months ago prompted our family of 10 to start a garden. We have COMPLETELY cut out all fast food and “kiddie” grocery snacks.
Christan:
My oldest is asking for his own garden next year, so I’m passing on a favorite of mine to the next generation!
Peggy:
Being able to feed my family fresh veggies for a much cheaper price than store-bought (if you were to just plant tomatoes alone, you;d save a bundle, since those are so spendy in-store!) is invaluable to me.
I also want to share what one reader – Amy - has done to encourage healthful eating. Her family bought chickens so they could have fresh eggs! AND, she writes “we live in your average neighborhood in the Seattle area.” You must read her delightful post about this adventure HERE.
Finally, I would LOVE to see how everyone’s gardens are shaping up! Whether you’ve got an herb garden growing in your windowsill or whether you’ve got fields of greens – I would love to see some pictures! I’ve decided to set up a photo album at The Coupon Project on Facebook where you can add them. Please consider doing that so we can encourage one another in this process!
Happy gardening!

We’ve had a garden since my first son was just a year old (now he’s 5), and one of my very favorite memories of his life is when, back in that first garden, he yanked on some leaves and up came a radish. At first, his face was so surprised. Then he smiled and held it up so triumphantly. We just washed the dirt off with the hose, and he ate it right there…and promptly went looking for more. To this day, it is a major feat if I can get radishes, cherry tomatoes, or fresh peas into the house. We all just stand out in the garden and eat them.
Whoops…I mean to add that I think it’s a great thing to do for your family, and I hope you find it to be as enjoyable and fulfilling as we have.
I have two very picky eaters in my house and I SOOO hope I’ll be sharing something similar later this summer! I really want to develop not just a tolerance for healthy food in my house…but a LOVE of it. Thanks, Julie!
