Safeway’s new coupon policy

A huge thanks to Maygan of Maybe Frugal for tipping me off to Safeway’s new coupon policy!

Here are a few highlights:

  • You may NOT present two coupons for a buy one, get one free sale.
  • You MAY present a valid Catalina from another retailer (think Walgreens Register Rewards, Albertsons’ Catalinas, etc.).
  • You MAY present manufacturer’s coupons with another retailer’s logo printed on them. (Make sure they are truly manufacturer’s coupons first!)
  • Overage is NOT permitted.
  • Internet coupons ARE accepted so long as they scan and do not appear blurry or distorted.

It also appears they’ve done away with the silly policy about not accepting printable coupons that exceed 50% of an item’s value.

While I’m still not a huge fan of couponing at Safeway, I definitely think this is a step in the right direction! I HIGHLY recommend you print and carry this policy with you when shopping at Safeway. I sincerely hope they do a better job of informing all personnel of this and work towards becoming a coupon-friendlier store. And hey Safeway, if you’re reading this, please consider adding your doubler program to Western Washington.

Thanks, Maygan!

Angela – I know you are not a Safeway coupon-matcher, but I’m wondering if you’re aware of any particularly spectacular deals we might see this weekend at the Proctor Safeway Grand Re-Opening on Saturday!?!?! We’ve gotten a ton of great coupons and a reusable grocery bag delivered in the mail. Any other inside scoop? I have to admit, we do 99% of our grocery shopping at Safeway and would love to learn how to save more there!

Great news! Now I can use up those RR’s from Walgreens w/o the fillers and and get something really needed. I usually do not shop at Safeway unless I can use ecoupons and regular coupons on the same item. Their prices seem way too high to me, and I dislike having to buy a minimum of $10 to use the store coupons. Thanks for the update.

Too Funny!!! I was JUST at my local Safeway today where I was told that I couldn’t use 2 of the same coupon in one transaction!! I don’t see that stated *anywhere* in this coupon acceptance policy. I’m sure it would fall under the default “Safeway reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion”.

Wow, it really pains me when I read these. Is it that hard to translate? Seriously, I get every cashier telling me something different every time I shop. Even when I do pull out the policy, the give me the “biblical translation” where I am still standing there saying, “truly, you are going to lose my entire transaction of over 200$ retail because you won’t price adjust a coupon down a PENNY?!”.
One point I have to clarify, you CAN use 2 coupons on a bogo, BUT, you can’t use a coupon on the item you are getting for free in a BOGO whether it’s a store sale or another coupon. SO, if they have snickers BOGO, and you want to use $1/2 coupon, it’s a no. BUT, if it’s BOGO and you have .50/1 you can. Essentially you ARE using 2 coupons if the bogo is store coupon sale or manufacture.
Good luck in the mud.

I had a cart of groceries yesterday and got had so many problems with my COMPLETELY legit coupons at check out that I just got so frusterated I told them I didn’t want to do my transaction at all. The cashier starting making different piles of the coupons I could and couldn’t use (alot of which were for free items like the SOBO BOGO, Nabsicso cookies when you buy milk and another box of cookies, and the latest coupons from vocal point for completely free items) and there was a line behind me so I figured I would just give up. It just would have taken too long to go back through my cart and decide what to put back.

This was just the final straw after many frusterating transcations at the Safeway in Forest Grove, OR.

Not sure if I should write a letter outlining my potential transaction and send it to the manager or to just drop it and if its not worth my time and I should just stop shopping there all together.

Jennifer, it’s stories like yours that confirm my decision to not post Safeway deals. They are just not consistent in how they handle coupons period. I personally believe Safeway is not interested in catering to the heavy coupon user. That being said, I know I have a sizeable chunk of readers that shop at Safeway and I’m glad to put this coupon policy into their hands so they can advocate for themselves.

Feel free to write a letter, but in my experience, you probably won’t get terribly far. Take your business elsewhere.

I have been told by 2 different cashiers in the past week that I can only use 2 internet printed coupons per product…I don’t see this. Has anyone had any success with showing the cashier the policy and having them follow it? Just curious…

Again, Safeway is VERY weird and random at checkout about their coupons. I still WAY prefer Fred Meyer and Albertsons. That being said, having a printed policy is a step in the right direction.

Still not enough to get me to start covering them regularly though.

i have had no problems using bricks coupons but have many problems using smartsource because they don’t have a “barcode”.

This is freakin’ awesome! I have written them so many letters regarding the two-coupon policy limit (looks like they restricted that to HI only now) – Sooo glad that language is out of there. Way too many stories of gals being told they couldn’t use an identical IP for a second product (I asked their Marketing Dept. if they were aware 2 is the standard print limit?!) Great to know they’ve been listening to all of us! Yippee!

Safeway in Lakewood, WA takes Walgreen’s Register Rewards. I spoke with the manager today and was able to use $22 worth of RRs to pay for my groceries. WAY cool!!
