Vlog: Sun – meet my garden!

Note: I’m REALLY quiet in this video because I made it at about 6 this morning and didn’t want to wake the neighbors. CRANK that volume to hear me!

This update is really amazing considering this garden’s humble beginnings. Did you see those HUGE tomato plants in my video? Here’s how they looked at the end of May:

And here’s how my strawberries looked the day I planted them – mid-May:

Your garden looks gorgeous–well done! I loved the video, and comparing it to the photos of where it all started really showed the difference in plant sizes then to now.

I forgot to mention when I left a comment: at 00:43 in your video you see a hole and a sticky substance on one of your lettuce leaves. That looks to me like slug damage–they often leave a sticky trail like that. You could apply Sluggo, which is safe to use around kids, pets and birds, or could set out a beer trap for them. I go into how to make a cheap one that works well in our rainy climate at my latest blog post called “Garden Update and Troublshooting”.

Good luck!

I had the same thought. I was surprised because the boxes are made of cedar and I had read somewhere slugs don’t like cedar. I actually have some Escar-GO! on hand that should work well. Thanks!

I love hearing your garden updates. I also put my first tiny raised bed out and it too has just taken off.

First of all there is nothing more exciting than growing your own food. Congratulations! I did mention awhile back about spacing. Your tomatoes may have developed mildew because you didn’t allow for space between them so air can circulate. I am finally getting tomatoes. For a few weeks the blossoms just kept falling off due to our wet weather. I have grown zuchini and it can get huge. One plant supplied us with plenty of zuchini. The past few years we have had problems with squash bugs so I no longer grow it. We have raspberries and they spread like crazy. We have a six foot fence and they top it. Most seed packages will tell you how long it will take for the vegetable to mature. Keeping a diary about what you planted and when will give you some idea when it will be ready.

I have a hunch the mildew had more to do with the wet weather…the mildew has been like that, even when the plants were small. That being said, I will plan better next year! Who knew they’d get so big so fast!! They are growing crazy. I went today to prune off a bunch of the lower branches to try and improve circulation.

Seeing how big things are now, I’m getting nervous about how I planned my garden. I will definitely do things different next year!

It seems to be the fastest way for me to do it since I have 7 containers! VERY easy…and nice to go back and review how things have grown, too. ;)

Wow, neat to see the comparison between now and then. The strawberries look so green and healthy and the corn too! Good job!

Visiting from TGP and I love your garden! I had some little baby pools we tried to plant veggies in and they didn’t do so well. But we have about 15 tomato plants in the ground and they are producing like crazy! We live in the Atlanta Georgia area and it’s so hot here, they love it like that I guess. Enjoyed your video update!
