Today, I was a very brave girl

For months now, my parents have been making green smoothies every day.

Green smoothies are exactly what they sound like: smoothies made with greens. My mom has been known to use everything from kale to spinach to beets to figs and every plant in between to make these drinks she calls “smoothies.”

Yesterday I harvested two huge heads of lettuce from my garden. Not one to waste food, I have every intention of using up all that lettuce before we leave for our trip Wednesday. So this morning, I decided to bite the bullet.

Lettuce, banana, kiwi, nectarine and coconut milk. I would like to dub this drink ”Farmer’s Market Blend.” While sort of strange at first, I’m actually quite full at the moment. I think my body is thanking me, but it may also be slightly confused by what I’ve just ingested.

It sounds pretty good, actually…

We make matcha(ground green tea) smoothies every day, sometimes adding bananas or other fruits. Matcha has more antioxidants than even pomegranate, goji or acai, especially since you’re drinking the leaves. It looks exactly like the drink you made. Very delicious!

Lisa, where do you get matcha? That sounds pretty healthful!

I might have to try this… Not sure I’m brave enough to put lettuce into a smoothie though. I also wanted to say that the picture is great! Perfect composition. Simple color scheme. Quite lovely.

Jason…thanks for the comment on the picture!! I am NOT a photographer by nature, but trying hard. This is the first picture taken with my new Kodak EasyShare camera. Your comment encourages me to keep working at the photography aspect of this blog.

I like green smoothies. My favorite is spinach, frozen banana, almond milk, peanut butter and cocoa powder.

Angela – we have a tea business and sell it online(if you click on my name it goes to the site). In general, if you use matcha for smoothies, baking, etc you can buy a culinary grade, you don’t need to buy the ceremonial grade matcha that comes in the tiny 30g tins. Uwajimaya and Central Market locations carry our teas as well.

@Cindy-Peanut butter? Now we’re talkin’! That sounds pretty good.

We’ve been making lots of green smoothies with our kale & swiss chard. My son didn’t blink an eye at the first one, but my daughter was a little hesitant. “It’s green!” she protested. I told her to try it and she liked it. We use whatever fruit we have on hand, usually ripened bananas I’ve frozen, peaches or blueberries. We’ve been at it all summer and now my daughter is the resident smoothie-maker!

I like the lettuce smoothies also. I mix with strawberries, bananas and water.
