This post is part of a work-at-home series I launched. Every day I’ll be featuring a different reader in a different work-at-home position.
Name: Tiffany Anderson
What I Do: Promote local businesses and pass savings on to the consumer
For How Long: 4 months
How Many Hours Per Week: 15-20
Income Earned: Income is better than expected. I am almost replacing my income from doing Mortgages. I have my personal bills that I need to be paying each month, I have those just about covered; however, I have overhead from this business that is going on a credit card each month. If I stay focused and work 3-5 hours everyday, I can do it. Each month is better than the month before.
How and why did you start your work-at-home position?
I have been in the mortgage business for 20 years and that industry has become very challenging and not very much fun. I have always been self employed and wanted to remain that way.
Wanting to help the small, local businesses become present on the internet and have affordable advertising available to them. I started playing around with the idea of an online “portal” of each city. Taking the idea to my husband and our 6 children we all came up with allcitybucks.com and the concept.
What exactly do you do in this position?
I have two very important components to this position. The first part is seeking out small businesses that are interested in advertising. This part takes most of my time. I literally go door to door. I try and attend all the local networking meeting in the area and then from there I walk the streets setting appointments for the following week to show the business owner what advertising opportunity our business has to offer them. I believe that face to face it the best way to meet the business owners and gain their trust. I meet so many wonderful people this way. In a world of email, it is tempting to sit at my desk and email everyone, however I have tried this along with “cold calls” and I definitely have better results in person.
The second part of my position is introducing and bringing people to the web page. This takes a lot of creativity. I had to realize early on that I have to be constantly “advertising” for my online “advertising” business. I carry cards, flyers and coupons at all times with me. I have recently began informing all of my family, friends and personal contacts from over the years of the webpage, asking them to visit, use, enjoy and mostly, spread the word!
What do you need to get started?
I thought all I needed was an awesome web page! What was most important to me, as far as the web page went, was I wanted a local designer to create and maintain. I also wanted a “4” year old to be able to “print” a coupon from the web page. I interviewed several designers and quickly realized that what I thought was going to be a pretty simple web page was the complete opposite and took quite a bit of design and lots of money to do so.
I love our web page and have established a great relationship with my designer. Since I am continually adding businesses and coupons to the web page, it was very important that I found someone that “gets” the webpage understands the concept and most important works well with me. Not really being a “tech” type person, this was the biggest challenge in my opinion.
While working on the web page (took about 6 weeks) I realized that I also needed a business license, lap top, wireless internet and an LLC! At week 8 I was ready, I had all the tools I needed to introduce allcitybucks.com to the community!
What excites you about this position?
I love what I do! I really enjoy that I am helping to connect the consumer to the community. My income is completely up to me! I am in full control. Being in control of your schedule is a huge “perk”!
What is challenging about this position?
My income and schedule! Working from home, and being a full time mom, first makes this the most challenging part of this entire endeavor. I have always and will continue to live by “family first”, however, when you work from home you really have to determine what this means for you and your family.
I have found that if I look at this like a real “job” and get myself ready for the day, my day is much more productive. I have done the “pajama” work from home thing, but really notice a difference in my productivity and attitude if I actually take the time to put myself together.
My income is directly affected by my schedule which is directly affected by my family which is directly affected from working from home…. Vicious circle! Being aware of this is a big step.
What do you need to make it in this position?
Positive attitude! You should enjoy meeting people, flexibility, organizational skills, and be able to handle rejection.
