Work-at-home series: final thoughts

Did you enjoy the work-at-home series this month? I’d first like to thank all the awesome readers that took time out to share their stories and inspire you with ways you could make money at home.

I also wanted  to share some final thoughts I have about working at home:

:: You will need to take a risk. In most cases, working from home will mean you’re going to have to step out of the proverbial boat. This may mean putting yourself out there in a new way to try something that may or may not work. I firmly believe that many leaders have become so not because they have possess the greatest talent or skills, but because they were willing to step out. If you’re scared about taking that first step, ask yourself “what’s the worst thing that could happen?” Is the worst case scenario really so terrible?

:: Don’t risk more than you can stand to lose. This is the flip side to the first point, but I would caution you from going into a lot of debt to start up your at-home business. Heck, try not to go into ANY debt if at all possible! When I started my copywriting business, we paid about $200 cash up-front for my licenses. If I lost that and didn’t make a dime? Yeah, I could’ve lived with myself! The good news is I did make a profit pretty quickly. And as the money slowly came in, I was able to pay a graphic designer for my website and business cards. Then I was able to purchase a new desktop computer. Consider growing your business at a pace you can afford.

:: Find something you can be passionate about. Working from home will require a strong level of self discipline, so wherever possible, find something that energizes you!

:: Seek support. When I started this blog, I seriously thought all the other coupon bloggers out there were my “competition.” Boy was I wrong! I would be NOWHERE without the support of my fellow deal bloggers! We swap ideas, strategies, tech tips, recommendations, you name it. If you are thinking of working from home, reach out to others that area already doing what you want to do. You’ll find us work-at-homers in general are a pretty friendly bunch, excited to share what we can!

:: Be willing to flex. If something’s not working, don’t be afraid to change it up! Experimentation is often key to finding what will keep you profitable and successful long term.

Thanks for writing these articles, Angela. They were very informative. I love my work-from-home bookkeeping job. It fits in very well with my family life. It is interesting to learn what other WAHMs are up to and how they run their business.
