Never say never.

Sure it’s an awesome Justin Bieber song featuring the incredibly adorable Jaden Smith.

But, it’s also a sentiment I should have taken to heart when I first began my couponing journey.

It was about 2 years ago that I was often heard saying, “I’ll NEVER go back to shopping without coupons.”

Eventually I had to eat those words, as my passion soon fizzled and my romance with coupons came to an abrupt end.

First Impressions

The first time my friend Kellie told me about her couponing adventures, I was sure it was too good to be true.

She held up a Walgreen’s receipt that was as long as ten coupon inserts lined up end to end.  Her grand total?  89 cents!

Wowsa.

My eyes flashed dollar signs.

Think of all the things I could do with my grocery budget if I only had to pay 89 pretty pennies for basic necessities.  We could vacation in the Carribbean.  Dine in fancy restaurants.  Spend afternoons at the spa.

With the lure of a new lifestyle ahead, I jumped into couponing head first, speeding out of the driveway the minute my son lay his head on the pillow.

I would spend entire evenings collecting my wares: egg noodles, Toy Story band-aids, and the Holy Grail of all: FREE {or nearly free} diapers!

As if floating on air, my grocery bags could not weigh me down when I returned from the hunt, high on my most frugal of finds.

Emptying my bags onto the dining room table, hubs oohed and ahhed over my purchases, intently listening as I retold of my travels to faraway Walgreen’s locales and Albie’s aisles.

Then, I birthed another son.  And, 20 months later, a third.

Suddenly, my life was a blur.  I could barely get my boys through the grocery store without cracking open a box of Cheez-its, yet alone attempt using coupons.

Slowly, I stopped collecting inserts.

Over time, my binder and I just, well, we lost touch.

We grew apart.

I was just not the person I once was.  And, I had three little people grappling for my attention.

So, I threw in the towel and stopped couponing altogether.

My stockpile turned into nothing more than a…pile, of miscellaneous non-perishables.

Looky here:

Stockpile that needs a makeover

My binder collected dust in the closet, where it now sits, bloated with outdated inserts.

See here:

Expired almost 6 months ago...oops.

I realized how bad things had gotten one day, when to my horror, I was forced to pay full price for cereal.

I knew things needed to change.  I had to get back to couponing, and fast.

The Tortoise & the Hare

In the race to save money, I had irresponsibly chosen the hare’s approach, sprinting from register to register, begging for multiple transactions.  At that pace, I quickly lost my motivation.

This Fall, I’m starting over with couponing.  And, this time, I’m Team Tortoise.  Slow and steady wins the race, er, at least cheap toilet paper.

What changed, you ask?  Why now, you question?

With 2 boys soon to be in preschool {yes, I did hear the angels singing}, I’ll only have my Little Bubba to tote along to the store.  So, I’m planning to make couponing a part of my new weekly routine.

I’m inviting you to join me as I journey back to my love of couponing, with a few new Team Tortoise guidelines.

  • I will only shop at stores along my normal route.  Right now, that means Fred Meyer and Walgreens.  I usually make a mid-week trip to these stores anyhow, so now I’ll just be more intentional about couponing there, too!
  • I will not let couponing prevent me from living my life.  In the past, I would forego doing fun things with my boys or miss out on entire evenings better spent with the hubs.  Not this time!  By making couponing a part of my weekly routine, I’ll be able to continue to do the things I enjoy.
  • I will not feel guilty for missing out on a deal.
  • I will create a manageable and useable stockpile.  In my first few months as a couponer, I accumulated 14 tubes of toothpaste, 36 cans of Progresso soup and 10 bottles of Gillette men’s body wash for the hubs.  We ate the soup pretty quickly.  The other stuff?  Let’s just say we’re still working our way through it.

I’ll also create some goals for myself each month.  In September, I will:

  •  Clean out the stockpile.  Donate any food I don’t want to the food pantry at church, or throw it out if it’s expired.
  • Organize my coupons, binder, and folders.
  • Subscribe to the Tacoma News Tribune.  Flipping through multiple copies of the paper while standing in the middle of Fred Meyer is no longer my idea of a good time.
  • {most importantly} Have fun!

I’ll be posting at the end of each month with my progress.  If you’ve fallen off the wagon with couponing, I’d love for you to join me!  Look for me on The Coupon Project Facebook wall for updates throughout the month.

On Monday, I shared my Grocery Outlet shopping trip with you, and many of you left great comments! Today I’m excited to be giving two lucky Coupon Project readers the opportunity to check it out with $25 gift cards!

Recently, Grocery Outlet reached out to me and sent me some samples of the kind of food you can find in their stores.

One of the things they sent me was this can of Amy’s Organic Golden Lentil soup (which was delicious, by the way). This item would’ve been priced at $1.49, as compared to $1.90 in stores.

Here’s another item they sent me that I loved:

MaraNatha is one of those brands that can be trickier to score a deal on. So $2.99 for a jar of this dark chocolate peanut spread would be a decent price in my book.

They also sent me Burt’s Bees lotion, tea, and pasta, with an emphasis on quality and gourmet brands. This seemed consistent with the type of items I was able to find at my store, such as this Alba Hand Wash for $2.49 (elsewhere $7.99).

Plus great low prices on many items…check out this Philadelphia Cooking Creme for $0.99 (elsewhere $4+).

For more on what to expect shopping there, please do read my post on Saving money at Grocery Outlet.

Enter to Win!

Grocery Outlet is graciously giving away TWO $25 gift cards to lucky Coupon Project readers so you can explore the store and see what it is you find…maybe:

  • Organic or specialty items
  • Back to school treats for the kids
  • Health and beauty items
  • Gourmet cheese or quality meat

To enter this contest:

  1. As a mandatory entry, leave a comment on this post. Tell me what excites you about shopping at Grocery Outlet, or how you think you might use the gift card.
  2. As an optional entry, share this giveaway! You can tweet about it using the “Tweet” button at the bottom of this post or share it on Facebook. Then you will need to come back and leave a separate comment telling me you’ve done so.

Limit two total comments per person. The contest will run through Tuesday, September 6th 5pm PST. At that time, two winners will be selected randomly from all winners and announced here at the blog. Winners will be contacted by email - so please make sure you are including the email on the form that you actually use and read.

Good luck!

I’m very excited today to share that I’m releasing my very first e-book: Easier Couponing!

A few months ago, you may have recalled some posts I wrote on the topic of Minimalist Couponing. Well, I got a lot of positive feedback – it really struck a chord with you. Here’s what I discovered:

  • Many of you are short on time.
  • Many of you are looking to save money on your groceries.
  • Many of you are turned off by the idea of chasing down every deal or driving to multiple stores per week.

Given that, I decided to expand upon the idea of couponing for the busy person. I took your questions and concerns and addressed them in Easier Couponing. With Easier Couponing, I focus on shaving time off as well as money and integrating couponing into your family’s style and routine. My goal is to help make couponing easier for you! Because when it’s easier, you stick with it!

Buy the Book!

Easier Couponing is available for purchase starting today! And because it’s an e-book, you can download it as soon as your purchase is complete. From there, you can either print it or save it to your computer.

Easier Couponing is priced at $14.50, but for a limited time and to celebrate the launch, I am offering a $5 off coupon code, bringing the total price to just $9.50 (hey! that’s the price of about three lattes, right?). Your payment is secure through PayPal – and just make sure to use the code TCPREADERS to get the discount.

Still not Sure?

You might want to read first if Easier Couponing right for you. Learn what Easier Couponing is – and what it isn’t.

And if you want even more? Tweet & get an excerpt of Easier Couponing for free!

I love Tillamook. I also love it when a company doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

I noticed the other day on the Tillamook Facebook wall, they were turning people into grilled cheese sandwiches. This is my daughter’s favorite meal, so I asked them if they could do the honors…

AFTER, as a grilled cheese sandwich:

This has got to be one of the most genius social media promotions I’ve ever seen.

Tillamook, as if I needed any more reason to love you….
