*GONE & UPDATE* Small Business Saturday: $25 American Express Card at Fed Ex

UPDATE: this promotion is now over. It seemed that more than a few of you were frustrated with this one. Unfortunately, I can never predict how these things will go or not, and I hope at least a few of you were able to snag it. There was some confusion if you needed to be an Amex customer or not. According to Fedex’s Facebook page:  “The card is available while supplies last, to US residents aged 18 and older, and you don’t have to be an Amex card holder in order to be eligible for the gift card.”

I appreciate your feedback on these offers – good and bad. It helps me decide which content to share in the future and which to leave well enough alone! Thoughts on this one? Did it work for you?

Did you know that November 26th is Small Business Saturday?

To recognize the importance of supporting small businesses, Fed Ex and American Express are teaming up to offer consumers $25 to shop small businesses.

Here’s how it works.

:: Starting November 1st at 1pm EST (10 AM PST), FedEx will be giving away $25 American Express cards. 30,000 of these will be given away to those who register through the Fedex Facebook page, under the Solutions Hub tab. My guess is they will go extremely fast.
:: These gift cards can be used to support small businesses on November 26, 2011.
:: If you are already an American Express customer, you’ll simply receive the $25 credit on your statement. Please note that you will still need to register ahead of time.

For additional information, please see the Fedex Facebook page as well as the Small Business Saturday Facebook page.

These may pair with store sales and may reach print caps quickly.

Fred Meyer Black Friday 2011: How to get an early preview

Black Friday will be here in less than a month – will you be shopping?

I wanted to let you know what my plans are here at the site when it comes to Black Friday.

1) First, I will be once again teaming with other Pacific Northwest Bloggers to “round up” Black Friday deals. This will save enormous amounts of time and pool our efforts. For this roundup, I’ll be tackling Ace Hardware. Stay tuned for more information.

2) Second, once again I’ll be providing Black Friday information for Fred Meyer. While I’ve not shopped much on Black Friday, I have to say Fred Meyer’s Black Friday shopping experience is just pleasant. They serve coffee and donuts, the stock is good, and the shoppers are in good spirits.

I’ve reached out to my pals at Fred Meyer to see what I can do to get you the inside scoop about all-things Black Friday there. Here’s what I’ve learned.

First: the Black Friday ad will be first shared to those who have signed up to their email newsletter. So, sign up if you’re planning on shopping the sale and want the ad before it’s shared to the general public!

You will need to sign up for the email newsletter no later than Wednesday, November 9th to ensure you will get the early version of the Black Friday ad later in the following week.

Fred Meyer Black Friday Preview

I plan on sharing more information about Fred Meyer’s Black Friday sale as it is shared with me and I obtain clearance to do so. (So stick around!)

I also plan on sharing my thoughts about Black Friday in general in the upcoming days. For more information, you might be interested to watch the webcast I recorded for the 2010 Holiday Shopping Season.

Adventures in Bulk Foods: Baking Soda

100_7826 (535x800) (535x800)

Today is the final installment in the Adventures in Bulk Foods series, and it’s a rather simple one.

Baking soda.

Baking soda is one of those essential household items and you can buy it for just $0.50/lb at WinCo. I spent $0.70 to fill this canning jar! (Which by the way, might be a great option for storing some of your bulk food finds, don’t you think?)

I checked the shelf price, and WinCo was selling packaged baking soda for $0.62/lb, and I found it at $0.76/lb recently at another area grocery store.

Baking soda has many uses beyond baking! Here are a few ways I’ve personally used baking soda, as well as ideas I found on the web.

1. If you have baby bottles or plastic cups that smell, add some baking soda and hot water and let sit. I swear it gets the stink out!

2. Clean your wooden cutting boards with baking soda and lemon juice. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to deodorize and kill the bacteria.

3. Leave an open box in your fridge to keep it smelling sweet. (Even between fridge cleans.)

4. Use it in place of shampoo! Yup, some swear by cleaning their hair with baking soda and water – that’s it!

5. Make a volcano with your kids.

6. Use it to freshen up your carpets. Sprinkle some on your carpets and vacuum up! (You might try a small section first.)

7. Keep the kitty litter box staying fresh. Add a thin layer to the bottom of the cat box and then add the litter.

8. Stay fresh as a daisy. One site I visited suggested you can use it as deodorant! Additionally, mix a little with warm water and use in the place of mouthwash.

It seems to me that buying baking soda in bulk is an eco-friendly way to purchase such a frugal, eco-friendly item! You might also be interested to see some uses I shared recently for vinegar.

What other uses can you think of for baking soda?

PS Thank you so much for joining me on this series! I have a follow-up post coming that will answer some of the questions you’ve asked since I launched it. Your kind comments and recipe helps have been very appreciated! And, in case you’re really sad to see this series end, I’ll have you know I have another series already in the works.

Fred Meyer Mix & Match Promotion = Blue Diamond Milk $0.49 each!

While I was excited about the Fred Meyer Mix & Match sale, I didn’t realize how extensive it really was. Reader Heather tipped me off on Facebook that there were MANY more participating items in this sale than were listed on the ad.

Fred Meyer deals 10/30 – 11/5

Here are the Fred Meyer deals starting today and running through Saturday, 11/5. A couple things different I noticed with today’s ad. First, the verbiage on most of the in-ad store coupons now reads “limit” instead of “first.” I’m not sure how that reads to you, but it seems like it’s a subtle way for them to work to limit quantities. Second, they are having a mix & match sale this week! I’ve never seen Fred Meyer do this, so this has my attention. Love it!

Remember to load e-coupons to your Fred Meyer Rewards card.

My favorite deals have been highlighted in red.

Beef Loin New York Steak

Fuji, Gala, Braeburn, or Jonagold Apples

Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna
$0.44 each with in-ad coupon (limit 8 )

Tyson Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thigh Strips, Breast, or Tenderloins
$5.99 each with in-ad coupon (limit 3)
Works out to $2.21 – $2.66/lb
