I’m excited to share today’s Adventures in Bulk Foods post with you today because I hope to demonstrate that you can turn to those bulk bins for more than just great eats!
Last week on Pinterest, I found a very simple and clever use of decorating with dried beans! (By the way, you can follow me on Pinterest if you’re there.)
I started by choosing three dried items in pretty fall colors. Specifically, I chose:
- Dried mung beans at $2.05/lb
- Popcorn at $0.69/lb
- Red Kidney Beans at $1.09/lb
Now I didn’t have any pretty hurricane vase like the one the blogger used in her post, but I did have a nice square vase that I’d picked up several months ago on clearance!
I started by adding the green mung beans to the bottom.
Next, I added the candle. To save money, I just pulled out one I had. I opted for an orange one since it went more with the theme than the light blue or coconut scented ones.
Next I spooned in the popcorn around it carefully.
Finally I added the dried kidney beans.
Here’s my completed creation:
I love how it turned out! And this is a frugal win-win. You have a stylish decoration for less, and when you’re done enjoying it? You can eat it!
PS. I asked my husband if he could give the firefighter’s OK on this candle decoration. He looked at it and sort of half smiled and walked away. So please. Be careful with candles. And make sure your home owner’s insurance is up to date.
PSS. Edited to add. If you don’t get the above statement, yes, it’s very tongue-in-cheek humor. I just feel since we’re dealing with fire it’s good to have some sort of disclosure. That is all.
PSSS. Edited to add. (Last one, I promise!) Today I noticed the blogger (My Heart’s Desire) who originally posted this idea had a variation using coffee beans! Since some of you have mentioned that idea, I thought I’d link to her new post too!
Moving along…any other ideas for decorating with dried beans and popcorn?

I love this idea, Ang!!!
I love using food to decorate! I have an old glass milk jar I have layed different colored beans in, they make great country kitchen decor!
Also Im lucky in the fact that my In-laws used to grow and sell popcorn. Recently they cleared out their storage unit and we got two 5 gallon buckets of the multi colored kernel popcorn! LOVE putting this in mason jars for decor and poping of course!
I love using Coffee beans to decorate! I put them in a wooden dish in the bathroom. I usually find cheap scented coffee beans(which i won’t drink).
Another great idea – and very fall!
Love this one Angela! I plan on doing the same thing.
Love this idea. Very thrifty and natural.
Thank you, again, Angela! I appreciate you!
Last year my sister had a very similar decoration using whole cloves she got at WinCo
So what happens if the candle buns down to the popcorn and……..
