My mother-in-law is coming to visit with us starting tomorrow and as I was cleaning the bathroom, I suddenly got an idea!
You know how when you stay at a hotel, they have items in the bathroom to make your stay a bit more comfortable – lotions, shampoo, soap? I thought, hey – why not do the same thing for my mother-in-law with some items from my stockpile? Check out what I put together:
The box I had from a gift I’ve received (yeah, I have no shame), and many of the items pictured were pennies, free, or better than free with sales and coupons! I love how couponing can help you make someone else’s day brighter without breaking the bank! The blanket I’d picked up from Fred Meyer’s Black Friday sale for just $3.99.
I then just included a simple card to tie it all together! (And of course, I cleaned the bathroom, which is always a bonus around here.)
I thought I’d share this idea with you in case you have out-of-town guests you are entertaining!

I love having our guest bathroom fully stocked with stuff in the shower, q-tips, extra toothpaste and toothbrushes, sanitizer, even Downy wrinkle release. Just in case someone forgot something. Also love that I can do it all for pennies!
Awesome idea!
Something to keep in mind when my in laws come see us this summer..
And its great to see a fellow Spokanite doing this!
Sorry, a total Duh moment.. forgot what site I was looking at. LOL
HA!! It’s all good.
We’re all Washingtonians!
I’m actually a proud Tacoman!
This is my favorite Christmas/birthday present for young adult relatives. At 18, 19, or older who wants to be spending their own personal money on tolietries? They get a basket full of items that I got free or almost free, twice a year, and get stocked up on their tolietries for much of the year. Costs me little to no money but saves them quite a bit! (The ‘smart’ ones have started dropping hints about which brands they prefer!)
I did this when I had all of my family come up to visit for my son’s graduation. I had my sister’s family of five plus my parents. I put out a box full of toiletry items similar to the one you have out. You would be surprised how much of it came in handy, especially the extra toothbrushes!
Super cute idea! (I may have to shamelessly steal it!). For my niece’s wedding shower I got a big a cleaning pail from Fred Meyer for $1 and filled it with cleaning products (detergents, glass cleaner, dishwashing soap, rubber gloves, SOS pads, etc.) that I had gotten mostly free and wrapped it with a big bow and a card that said “For Michael” (her fiancee). It was a really fun present and cost me almost nothing to give. I remember when my husband and I were newly married we were so poor the LAST thing I wanted to spend money on was cleaning supplies and since they are college students I thought they might also appreciate spending the little money they have on something more fun than bathroom cleaner!
Thanks for the great idea – I also love how couponing can make someone else’s day brighter!
This is also a great idea for weddings!
Fill the baskets/boxes up with mini toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, gum, Kleenex, etc….. things that guests might need (or want) during a reception, but didn’t bring!
Put them on the bathroom counters, and everyone will rave!!!
i attended a wedding that had something like this. It was so welcome as the wedding was outside and WINDY! The hairbrush and hairspray came in very handy for the guests (and maybe even the bride!).
Great post! We just returned from an out-of-state trip to see family. My sister-in-law had a basket in the guest room with lotion, q-tips, lip balm, candle (and matches), sunscreen, tissues, Advil, body wash and ‘bath poof’ (what are those things really called?!).
It was so nice!
Great idea!
