R.I.P., my Student Loan

Rest in peace, my student loan.

You were always there for me (or should I say, I was always there for you?)

Every month, we’d meet over ACH. I’m sure you appreciated the meeting more than I did.

To add insult to injury, many a person thought an English degree was a silly investment.

(Because surely, there is nothing I could do with it other than teach.)

You hung around so long I thought we’d never say goodbye.

But the day has come….

So while you rest in peace, my student loan, I’ll rest easier tonight.

Congratulations! We’re just getting ready to start taking them out. The Federal Financial Aid program thinks our family can contribute $27,000 per year – - they are wrong. So loans it will be. Seems sad for a good kid that has a 3.97 gap, does sports, plays in the symphony and the marching band to not qualify for aid or many of the scholarship programs. Oh well, I’m sure there are plenty of other people in worse shape than we are with it.

There is a scholarship/grant for just about everything you just need to know where to look….sort of like coupons ;)

Check with your school guidance counselor and do some searching online (avoid the sites requiring you to pay or put in way too much info). Right now is about the time the applications need to be in for next school year, most require well written essays and don’t forget to check your local fraternal organizations like the Lions, Elk, Rotary, Moose etc because they give scholarships as well. Good Luck

I’d 100% agree with this! I think one of the reasons my student loan wasn’t so crazy in the first place was because I took advantage of workstudy, scholarships, and grants. I attended a private university for one year and then public for the rest. Surprisingly, the private school had MUCH more to offer.

I asked my husband the other day if he’d call in when we’re done so we can do the hokey “we’re debt free” scream over the phone. Seems hokey now, but I bet when we’re there will be dancin’ in the streets with glee!

You have to do the yell, that’s the most inspiring part of Dave’s show. I get all choked up hearing how free the callers feel once they are out from under the mountain of debt.
