The REAL April Series: Adventures in Homesteading

Yesterday I may have fooled a few of you into thinking I was going to go Walden-style and live in the woods by myself for a month. Yeah, no, I’m not doing that.

But I DO actually have a fantastic series planned for the month of April that I think you will enjoy. I’m calling it Adventures in Homesteading.

Pioneer Living for Modern Day

It seems that more and more people are pursuing the following things (any or all):

  • Urban self-reliance
  • Eco-friendly living
  • Return to simpler living
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Growing and preserving food

While these topics are somewhat interesting to me, what bothers me is that often the approach is daunting, overwhelming, or fearful. My goal for the next month will be to draw inspiration from pioneer living and present it in a way that is fun, approachable, and most important, doable.

If I show you how to make soap from lye and also warn you how dangerous and difficult it is – well, who wants to do that? But if I can show you methods of soapmaking that are easy and useful, you might consider it. I want you to participate in this adventure with me, not merely observe me doing it.

How will this Series Work?

Expect posts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday everyday for the month of April. There may be other posts above and beyond that, but do look for at least three each week. Adventures in Homesteading will be one part my own exploration of the topic, one part DIY, one part story-telling, and one part just plain fun. I am pleased to have brought in a few different contributors to share their ideas and expertise to give you a rounded idea of how homesteading might look. We’re going to tackle some things that feel comfortable (like recipes) and other things that might push you just a bit out of your comfort zone (you’ll have to stay tuned for those!).

In the end, I hope you will be inspired to live simpler as well as gain a new sense of gratitude for the conveniences that DO make our lives easier.

Join me Wednesday for the first post on this series!

That sounds like such a fun series!! I have been trying this last year to get back to as much simple and made from scratch as possible. I am so excited to see what kind of fun projects you come up with.

I haven’t made soap since high school! I will totally do that with you and whatever fun DIY projects you come up with! We already do so much the DIY way (our whole downstairs remodel (hardwood floors, tile countertops, built a bar and a pantry) was done with our blood, sweat and plenty of tears) and most everything I make to eat is done entirely by scratch, so I am so excited for this series and to learn how to do more stuff on my own :)

I agree, I like the monthly series and that is why I keep coming back (as I don’t even use coupons). I have worked on emergency preparedness for years and I actually enjoy updating it. This past weekend I did our emergency binder (all of our important documents, immunization records, transcripts, title of ownership’s, etc….) and it is nicely put together now. I found a lady on pinterest that did something similar and has free printables for the binder to keep it even more organized and looking pretty. Anyhow, I am looking forward to your tip’s and see what you come up with.

Thank you so much! This will very much be a learn-with-me-as-I-learn-it type venture. ;)

Totally excited to read this series. After growing up on a farm by Mt. Rainier, I moved to Tacoma when I was 18, and recently moved out to the Belfair area. I find, being out here, that I really want to become less reliant on grocery stores and other people to take care of my family. My girls and I will also be right along with you on the hands-on activities! Thank you so much for all you do to entertain and inform your readers!

Very excited about this series. Thanks for always exploring more than just coupons. I think you cover such a nice spectrum of ideas and I’ve tried things I wouldn’t have thanks to your blog!

I am so excited for this series! My boyfriend and I bought our dream house and property two years ago and we have been slowly easing our family off the grid. It’s been such a learning experience!! Broken pipes, botched batches of laundry soap (don’t ask!), and CHICKENS! But I wouldn’t have it any other way…
I also just wanted to take a minute and say thanks for all the time you put into this blog. I started couponing out of necessity and was really lost at first. With help like yours, I am now teaching others how to coupon in an ethical and practical way. Thank you!!! : )

Thank you so much for taking time out to leave such a nice comment & compliment! I just sat down to the computer to follow up on the day’s comments and I can tell you I’ll be going to bed with a smile on my face!

Thank you!

Excited about this series Angela! I love your blog and I live in Oklahoma, so a lot of the coupon stuff isn’t even relevant to me. I started following your blog when I began couponing a year ago. Your blog is not only useful for couponers (nationwide) and saving money, but you keep it SO interesting with all your extra posts and series! I appreciate the time you put into these! Thanks!!

I love hearing this, Sierra! While I do share local deals, my goal is to do stuff that readers ANYWHERE can enjoy & relate to. I also hope that some of my local posts may give nationally-based readers ideas for saving at stores near them.

Thank you!
