Traveling Readers: Is this a good deal to Hawaii?

uh, watch out maybe?

Today I was looking at Tippr deals, and one in particular caught my eye. It seems like it *might* be a deal, but I have only traveled to Hawaii once. I thought I’d share it in case it really is a good deal, and if nothing else, to hear from some of my jetsetting readers how they might save on something as luxurious as a trip to Hawaii.

Here’s the scoop: pay $128 and you get 2 round-trip tickets to Hawaii. Here’s the catch, because I know you’re thinking that already: you have to stay at one of four participating One Stop Travel hotels for at least 4 nights. You can see the list of participating hotels at the One Stop Travel website, which start at $256/night (that cheapest option also includes a snorkeling excursion for 2).

When I did the math, here’s how it could come out at the least expensive end:

4 nights @ $256 = $1,024
2 airfare @ $128 = $128
Total = $1,152 for hotel & airfare for 2

This seems like a decent deal to me, but I wanted to ask you – is it? How have you saved on a Hawaiian trip before?

If you are interested to learn more about this particular deal, head to Tippr. There is more information as well as contacts if you choose to look into before purchasing the airfare. You’d have up to 2 years to redeem the voucher.

I think its probably a decent deal, but not amazing. My husband and I went to Hawaii in 2007 and I paid about 1300 for 5 nights (this trip was also booked 1 week before we flew out so my numbers might be skewed a bit). If you are thinking of going within the next year, check out http://www.farecast.com to get an idea of flight costs. I love farecast because it helps predict if fares are going up/down and also when the best time to go is. Depending what airfare is, I’d suggest just sticking to a normal travelocity/orbitz type booking since you would have a larger hotel selection.

The airfare is definitely a great deal. We go every year and pay about $300-$350 per person for a direct flight to Honolulu. The hotel part depends on what time of year you go. We go in the fall – the weather is still in the 80s everyday and it’s a great off-peak time to go, that’s if you’re willing to take your kids out of school if they are coming along. I noticed you can stay at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani for as low as $159/night in October just booking yourself…so you it depends on how all the math worked out if you’ve already selected the week you think you might be going. Although downtown Honolulu is pretty loud.. we like staying in Ko Olina on the quieter sunny west side in Oahu. What we’ve done the last two years is rent a time-share …you get that washer/dryer if you have the kids along as well as full kitchen and outdoor grills which saves a lot on food. If it’s at a resort like the Marriott you get all the resort amenities as well. Our family of 3 costs have been around $3,000 all-in … we set up a special vacation savings account and all year, any rebates, including tax returns, ebates, ebay, craiglist, mail-in rebates we put into our vacation fund. You’d be surprised how quick it can add up. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Not a particularly good deal at all. The site I use for Hawaii travel is get2hawaii.com It’s consistently the lowest. Right now there are some pretty good deals in the fall going on. Good luck.

I dont know how you feel about going through a travel agent, but I went with my mom a few years back and we paid around $550 each which included airfare, car rental, and hotel for a week. Might just want to see what kind of deals they can get just to compare.

When I went to Kauai I spent about $1000 total on airfare and hotel for 10 nights. Granted I did use miles from my credit card for some of the airfare. The hotel was the equivalent to motel 6 but seriously, who spends time in a hotel when you are in paradise. It was clean and comfortable. I think you could do way better on the hotel. Also, 4 nights is not very much time, can you add additional nights?

My late grandparents retired to Hawaii when I was ten so I’ve made a lot of trips there. It is an average deal for high season for hotels. The airfare is good. The thing you have to remember is you probably have to add in the cost of a flight from Oahu if you go to one of the smaller Islands. And food in Hawaii is higher priced in general even at the grocery store so that has to be added into the cost of the trip too. Except for the I was there during a tropical storm, it has always been nice weather. I would hold off until fall for the best deals on the hotels if you can.
