Field Roast Frankfurters: Review and Giveaway (7 winners!)

Have you ever tried anything made by Seattle-based company Field Roast? If not, let me put in a word for them. A very good word. Field Roast makes what they call “grain meats” which are vegetarian/vegan meats using grains. They are….delicious.

I had the pleasure of touring the company a few years back and was so impressed! First off, the place just smells AH-MAZING when you walk in – sort of like the holidays, or something yummy baking away. They also work in small batches and use real ingredients! Wherever possible, they source their ingredients locally, too.

In the photo above, a Field Roast employee lovingly packs up my favorite Field Roast item – their Celebration Roast! Here’s a description, to get your mouth watering this morning:

Roast grain meat, fresh cut butternut squash, mushrooms and granny smith apples seasoned with a blend of rosemary, thyme and sage. We then surround the stuffing with our most luxuriant grain meat seasoned with rubbed sage, garlic and lemon juice.

This would be suitable to serve your vegan pals in lieu of turkey at the holidays! It’s so full of flavor and tastes exactly like what you want to eat around the holidays. YUM!

The folks at Field Roast sent me some coupons recently to try their newest product:

Yes, that’d be vegetarian frankfurters, folks! At first I was thinking, really? I honestly wasn’t so sure about this. But I also know I’ve adored everything I’ve ever tried from Field Roast.

The instructions say you can snip them apart and either boil them with the casing on or remove the casing and pan fry/grill them. I opted for the boiling method.

If you’re wondering about what on earth ingredients you’d use to make a vegan frankfurter, I thought I’d fill you in:

Pretty much grains, oil, and seasoning! Nothing weird! Oh, and lest you think vegans don’t get enough protein? Check out that nutrition label – one serving provides a whopping 21 grams of protein! It also provides you with 4 grams of fiber…try getting that in your regular frankfurter! You’ll also see these are low in fat and saturated fat, too and have 0 grams of cholesterol. I think these make a great alternative to regular old hot dogs!

Here’s how I enjoyed mine at lunch yesterday:

I served mine with a couple heirloom cukes from my garden as well as a jar of homemade ambrosia. Let me tell you, I LOVED the Field Roast frankfurter! It has the consistency that reminds you of meat and the flavors that remind you of summer.

I am looking forward to enjoying another one for lunch today!

Wondering where you can try Field Roast products? They sell an extensive line at Whole Foods Market (which was the ONLY place I found the frankfurters in my area), but I’ve also seen products at Marlene’s, QFC, Safeway, and Fred Meyer. Look for them in the section that sells vegetarian meats. To learn more about Field Roast, please visit them online.

So for my daughter’s 3 yr BD party next month, we’re having hot dogs (it’s a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme). The problem is that my mother in law doesn’t eat beef or pork. So I could buy chicken sausages for her (which is fine) OR we could win these and I could offer her this vegan option. Actually, they sound better to me than regular hot dogs, too!

We love field roast! Have tried the Italian, chipotle and apple sage sausages. I also love their meatloaf! Would love to try the frankfurters. Costco occasionally carries the sausages in a multi pack FYI. :)

I’m curious to try them, never had them before. I like sausage but not how it makes me feel afterwards. I bet that wouldn’t happen with a veggie dog!

I’ve never heard of Field Roast but would be interested to try their products. I haven’t eaten a meat hot dog in 30+ years — it would be nice to find an alternative that I could eat!

I LOVE Field Roast. Our son is hooked on the apples sage one, sadly they are too expensive to really fund his addiction, but like the reader above, I have noticed that Costco started carrying a mix pack :) I would love to try their hot dogs, I didn’t even know they made them! We really like to make jambalaya with their Italian sausages…I can’t remember what “real” sausage tastes like, but these are DEEEE-licious!!!

We haven’t heard of Field Roast. Now that we do we would love to try and the coupon would help in that endeavor.

I LOVE the field roast and I would love to try the frankfurters. My husband was just asking me last night what sausage casings were made of (he is grossed out by sausage) and we were talking about it and I bet he’d be willing to try this!

My kids LOVE this brand. Classic Thanksgiving choice for them. Thanks for the chance to win

Caroline September 18, 2012 at 9:50 am

I haven’t heard of these and never tried them, but it sounds really good. I already have several recipes in mind where I could use those, especially some stews in the crockpot, or cut up in little pieces and mix with some organic bbq sauce in the crockpot as a party snack for kids and adults.
Thanks for sharing this!

Catherine September 18, 2012 at 9:52 am

Sounds fun and interesting – I’d love to try some!

These sound delicious! We’d love to try them… I bet my son wouldn’t know the difference!

Amanda S September 18, 2012 at 10:21 am

I’ve been considering the idea about going vegitarian, simply because of all the health benefits. This would be a great kick start! They sound great!

Cathy September 18, 2012 at 10:24 am

OMG! I would love to convert my carnivore husband and boys and show them that vegan can be delicious. :)

Carolyn September 18, 2012 at 11:42 am

I am super impressed with the protein content!! I am always looking for high protein/low carb and low fat foods!! Who knew I’d find it in hotdog! Dying to try it!

Jill September 18, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I love Field Roast! I have not tried the frankfurters yet, though, so this would be fun to win. My favorite Field Roast product is the apple sage sausage.

Christine September 18, 2012 at 1:52 pm

I am always looking for new and tasty vegan items to test out. I love hot dogs on the bbq and I would LOVE to try some of these!!

Danyelle September 18, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I would like to try this because it would be fun to sneak it into dinner for my husband. I wonder if he would notice any difference from our usual turkey dogs?

christine carpenter September 18, 2012 at 2:09 pm

we try to have meat only a couple of days a week and I am always looking for something new and vegetarian to compliment our menus
Thanks for a really good and local blog

I have tried some field roast products, and liked them. I’ve struggled to find good “vegi-dogs” and would like to try their version.

Kelly Garbato September 18, 2012 at 7:00 pm

I’m a vegan & love the Field Roast sausages. The not-dogs look pretty tasty too!

Cari September 18, 2012 at 7:32 pm

I found the field roast at Costco a few months back and the whole family enjoyed it. I haven’t checked recently but now I am wanting to next time I go there. I’m anxious to try the hot dogs- I too have had a hard time finding good tasting veggie dogs and these sound great!

Keri September 18, 2012 at 8:27 pm

I don’t eat meat and these sound delicious!

Candra September 18, 2012 at 9:16 pm

Those look delicious! I do, in fact, have a Whole Foods in town, so I’d love to try them!

Janet September 19, 2012 at 3:54 am

I’ve heard so many great reviews of Field Roast products, but haven’t tried them yet, so I’d love the chance. Thanks, Angela!

Jasmine B September 19, 2012 at 10:30 am

I love Field Roast! It’s a little spendy so my husband and I don’t get it too often, but we jump at every chance we do!

Sara P. September 20, 2012 at 9:00 am

I would love to try this. I have seen field roast at the grocery store before, and have been curious.

Jessica September 20, 2012 at 11:52 am

I would love to win :) It’s hard to find a good vegetarian hot dog that isn’t full of weird ingredients. I’ve tried most of their sausages, they’re really good mixed into pasta sauce. Costco often has them for a good price.

Carla Moschetti September 20, 2012 at 9:32 pm

I’ve wanted to try the holiday roast for awhile now, but it just hasn’t been in my budget yet. I have bought and tried their kielbasa before, and I liked. I also had a sample taste of the frankfurter at the vegfest. It was pretty good! BTW, you can also find Field Roast products at the Tacoma Food Co-op!
