“Bird friendly coffee is coffee grown on farms under a shade-tree canopy, forest-like habitat. Bird friendly coffee mostly benefits neotropical migratory songbirds that winter in Central American rainforests. Habitat loss, especially tropical rainforests, have caused a decline in migratory songbird populations. And sun coffee plantations have contributed to this loss. We have been speaking in the general sense that “bird friendly coffee” is any coffee grown on shaded farms. But actually the phrase, “Bird Friendly®” has been trade-marked by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center of the National Zoo. Coffees with this logo mean that they are certified as shade grown and organic by an independent third-party inspector using the Smithsonian’s criteria. And Bird Friendly® coffees contribute 25 cents per pound to support Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center research and conservation programs.” Quoted from http://www.birdwatching-bliss.com/bird-friendly-coffee.html

Bird Friendly coffee is coffee is grown in forests, rather than land that has been cleared of all vegetation.

I love it when all of the groceries that I desperately need are on sale at one place! I’ll be at Fred Meyer this week, too.

I totally agree. I feel like Fred Meyer does an excellent job of this – across the board, offering good prices on real food like produce. A lot of people say, “there are no coupons for produce” but my retort is, then find a good sale! It can be done! ;)

The iD gum by Stride is b1g1 this week at FM. I used the b1g1 from copons.com and they worked out to be .21 cents for every 2. I think it may only be good through Sat. 9/15 but I’m not sure.

Hi Angela!!!
First of all I just want to say that I really enjoy of your site. You are full of so many ideas and are very resourceful. I love it!

Lately I have been thinking of getting a small freezer to put in our garage so that I may freeze all the great veggies/foods that I find on sale. I have been thinking of looking for one on craigslist but I am a little scared that I could end up getting something that will end up not working or lasting very long. Do you have any suggestions on getting a good affordable freezer?

Thank you so much!

I bought a small chest freezer (7 cubic feet I think?) from Lowe’s for around $176. I live in an apartment so put it on my balcony. Being able to stock up on meat/veggies/cheese/milk + freezing produce and homemade tomato sauce has FAR MORE than made up for the price. I wasn’t finding any small ones on craigslist or I would have bought there. I have had very very good luck with craiglist for everything from electronics to furniture to rental properties. If buying from a home improvement store like Lowe’s/Home Depot, keep an eye out for sales, check the scratch/dent stores (Sears has these I know), and use gift cards, esp. when there are gift card deals at the grocery stores where you buy $50 in cards, get $10 in groceries, etc.
