I dislike wine greatly so when a recipe calls for white wine I have absolutely no idea what I should be trying to purchase. I asked my MIL and she said, “A good cooking wine.” so I asked “Liiiiike?” to which her husband piped in with “You probably want to stay away from sweet, dessert wines.”
I spent around 30 minutes reading labels of wine bottles in Albie’s trying to decipher how a peach note might play into cooking a sauce for chicken…I guessed that Muscat wine would be related to Muscatel which I remember the wino’s on 70′s sitcoms were frequently consuming so probably not one I wanted to cook with.
PLEASE, I implore someone to tell me what the heck a “good cooking wine” is so I can get it for 20% off at GO.
TY TY
D’Anna, my very best recommendation would be to ask someone in the store! If you are looking for a white cooking wine, I’d spring for Chardonnay, which is a drier white. For red? Hmmmm….I usually just use whatever I have on hand – Merlot seems to work good.
Are you anywhere near the South Tacoma store? If so, do ask for Christopher – he is a genius when it comes to wine selection and I’m sure would love to help you.
My GO is in Longview, I’ll be popping in there this weekend for one of each. Really, you have no idea how much you have helped on this. I watch Food Network a lot and they never show the labels!
