I have some really talented friends that are awesome when it comes to decorating, building, and crafting on a budget. Recently, we took a spin through the University Village in Seattle for some inspiration. I immediately fell in love with this centerpiece from Room and Board:
How adorable is this? I found it in several places throughout the store with an assortment of cute produce – red onions, green apples…. I was very tempted to buy it.
After all – how much would you peg this simple contraption for? $15? $20?
Yeah, eep. I could probably buy an entire dining room set for that price, so sorry Charlie.
So off to the thrift store we went. My pal Susan spied a cute metal rack that I thought might work. Susan has a good eye for these things so I spent $5 on my Goodwill’d version. Now I loved LOVED the lemons I saw at Room & Board, but all I had were the smallish Meyer lemons. And I didn’t have enough of them. My friend Sarah suggested maybe I should buy some fake fruit but *ahem!* this is functional art, my friend. We’re only going to be using real fruit.
But somehow a week or so later I can’t help but feel that a few shriveled & moldy Meyer lemons is not the look I was going for. With that, I give you my submission to the #nailedit meme:
Maybe I should suck it up and take Sarah’s advice buy some larger, fake fruit instead.

Maybe some grapefruit or oranges!?!! Or an assortment of seasonal fruits…
Ooooo…grapefruit wouldn’t be bad. Or maybe pommelo!
Pier 1 Imports has fake lemons but each one will set you back more than the Goodwill rack unfortunately. :/
HA! Yeah, that would kind of defeat the purpose, huh?
OH. MY. GOD. Angela, you are hilarious. I know you will make this work! But your NAILED IT has me rolling on the floor laughing. Maybe you should stick to couponing and gardening? haha
Angela, did you check Michaels for “Faux Fruit”? I think I bought mine there, with 40-50% off coupons of course.
Good thought!
Check out the dollar tree store. I think I saw some fake fruit there recently.
OH! That is not a bad idea!
