For at least the last 6 years now, my husband and I head to the office store and purchase a giant at-a-glance laminated calendar like the one pictured above. This calendar gets filled out with my husband’s work schedule (he’s a firefighter, so the days he works rotate), special days/vacations, and birthdays. We then tape it up on the inside of our pantry door, like so:
I know it sounds so simple; but it’s really been a life saver! Before implementing this method, I’d never know what to say to friends when we received an invitation three-four weeks out. “I’ll have to check with Terry’s schedule and get back to you!” Now I can just go over and glance at the entire year to see when he’s working and what we’ve got going on.
I know that many people love using their phones and programs such as Google Calendar to track stuff like this, but there is definitely something nice about being able to just glace at your family’s schedule in one spot, easily.
We already have our 2016 calendar up on the door – I can’t imagine not having it there now, because it’s been so helpful!
While we’ve paid over $20 for ours at the local office store, you might be interested to know you can score a similar one for just $8.98 on Amazon right now.
You may also wish to pick up a pack of Wet Erase markers, like these 8-pack (currently for about $6.50). One idea my husband came up that I love is color coding our calendar. He selects one color for birthdays and another for work days. What else could you track on your family’s calender?
- Sports schedules
- After-school activities
- Volunteer schedule
- Garbage/Recycle days
- Home & Car maintenance reminders
- Date nights
- Goal tracking (to sync with your New Year’s resolutions!)
- Many other ideas!
