Black Friday

Now I love the holiday season…don’t get me wrong. And I’m sure many of you do, too. (And if you live in Western Washingon as I do, you’re likely to be confused about what season this is anyways.)

However, am I the only one slightly annoyed by overly eager retailers such as this:

Yes…that’s right. This Friday Target has declared “Black Friday,” which I find completely ridiculous since Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, not some random Friday in July. Now I’m not opposed to seeing them do some killer one-day only type deals, but really…another name, perhaps? (Thanks for the heads up, Frugal Coupon Living)

Target isn’t the only one confused about the time of year, either.

The Consumerist reports that Sears “has already gotten up full Christmas-themed displays, just in time for Labor Day” and that Macy’s is already hyping up Santa’s pending arrival.

Last November, I decided to dedicate hours of my life to pouring over Black Friday ads. You can imagine my frustration when some stores *cough SEARS* decided to do “every Saturday is Black Friday!” type sales for the entire month. This made it extremely challenging to pinpoint when the best sales actually were occurring. Retailers, you keep this up and no one is going to give a fart about your Black Friday sales when November 26 finally does roll around!

So even though I woke up to fog and had to bundle my kids in coats and hats before heading out this morning, please stores, my calendar still says it’s July. Let’s live the dream of summer for at least a few more weeks. Please?

Are you already thinking about shopping for the holidays? Do you think tactics such as these demonstrate a certain desparation on the part of the retailers? Or do you wish “everyday could be Christmas?”

Right now, Amazon has select colors (red & camel) of this microsuede 3-piece duvet cover marked down to just $29.99, 75% off the retail price of $129.99! That price is good for full/queen or king. Set includes duvet and two shams and is machine washable. It received an average 4 out of 5 star rating by reviewers. As the other colors are mostly unavailable, I'm recommending you move if you want to snag this up!

Shipping is free.

Dollhouse

Through November 30th only, you can score an amazing gift for your little girl! This Little Tikes 2-in-1 dollhouse was $299 with $85 oversize shipping, but you can snag it for just $149 with $6.95 shipping right now! It is geared for ages 2-6.

It received an average of 4 out of 5 stars. The one comment that came up was that it's work to assemble, so be prepared to put a little work in (or call someone handy to help!)

And go through Ebates and earn 3% cash back on your purchase – this will help defray the cost of shipping for you! Go here to sign up for Ebates, then search for Little Tikes and you'll be directed to their site. Your cash back rewards are credited to your PayPal account quarterly.

Please don't forget Ebates when doing your online shopping! Did you know that right now, you can get 10% cash back on your purchases at Old Navy? That makes for some pretty sweet deals.

To get started, all you need to do is enter your email address and create a password. That's all that's required! Then, select Old Navy from their extensive menu and you'll be redirected to the site. Shop as normal. Ebates will automatically credit your account 10% after you've completed your purchase.

Here are a couple deals I think would work well with this rebate:

Today only, you can score the PS3 bundle on Amazon. From what I understand, this is similar to a deal that Walmart was offering as a "doorbuster" on their website today, but it currently sold out of. Item also ships for free.

This slim 120GB  console comes with KillZone and Infamous and $10 Amazon credit! Dealnews is reporting that this is $113 lower than they could find elsewhere for the total value of the games and console.

Remember, this is today only.

Late last night I finally completely my Black Friday ad review. Later today, I'll be sharing my favorite deals from many different categories including electronics, toys, and stocking stuffers. This morning I thought I'd take some time to share my general impression of the "Black Friday" vibe this year.

Freebies
Many retailers will be offering incentives for you to haul yourself out of bed including free gift cards, Christmas decor, and food. I will be compiling a list of all the freebies I could find along with my deal post later today.

Manage that foot traffic!
Retailers will be trying a variety of tactics this year to control foot traffic. Some stores will be offering Thanksgiving Day sales (such as Old Navy and Walgreens). JC Penney will be offering 4am doorbusters and then 1pm doorbusters. Toys R' Us will be opening its doors midnight Friday. Best Buy will be offering tickets to customers up to two hours before the store opens for its 5am doorbuster deals.

Apples to Oranges
The tricky thing about comparing Black Friday deals is that you're often comparing apples to oranges. While I find several Nintendo DSi deals, for instance, each had slightly different game bundles and components. So the bundle with 5 games might not be a good deal for you if you don't want those games. Rarely did I find the same model of camera or TV on sale in two ads. This is where you'll have to do your research on brands and models to determine if the deal is right for you.
Popular Items
This is my first year spending this amount of time and attention on the Black Friday ads. I noticed several items appeared over and over this year. (But again, note that these items might also normally appear over and over for Black Friday.) Here are a few that stood out to me:

Blu-Ray movies & DVDs. Target and Best Buy top my list as great places to find movies on sale. Blu-Ray movies, in particular, will be a good deal with many titles $9.99 or less.

Snuggies. Good gravy, are these really that popular? What is the deal! A couple stores will have them for $9.99 on Black Friday (including Fred Meyer), but tomorrow only, you can buy one for $7.99 at Walgreens after receiving a $2 Register Reward.

GPS. These units have definitely come down in price, making them more affordable than before. Brands I saw repeatedly included Tom Tom and Garmin, with the deepest discounts for Tom Tom units. I will be sharing a few of my favorite GPS deals later today.

Fleece. Rite Aid will be offering fleece throws for $1.99, and stores including Target, JC Penney, and Old Navy will be offering sales on fleece jackets and pullovers for the family. Puffer jackets seem to be a popular choice this year with many of the styles 50% off at $15 or less.

Pre-lit Christmas decorations. In addition to trees, I found a couple stores offering discounts on potted porch pre-lit tree sets. As is to be expected, Christmas lights, ornaments, and other decor will be on sale at virtually every store from Macys to Home Depot.

Affordable Digital Cameras. While I found LOTS of digital cameras on sale, I was delighted to find many varieties for $99 or less – and some as low as $49.

Online Deals may yet be had!
I know many of my readers want a good deal, but are unsure about braving the crowds to save some money. Good news! Once Black Friday is over, I'll be focusing my time on Cyber Monday. I believe we'll be seeing many wonderful online deals. On Cyber Monday, many online merchants will be offering free shipping too. When you go through Ebates, you'll be able to enjoy cash back rebates as well. My conclusion? If you want to stay at home, stay at home. There will be deals for you too.

Watch later for my Black Friday deals post!

My friends over at Hotcouponworld are working hard to collect 2,000 survey responses before Thanksgiving about Black Friday. As of tonight, they are roughly halfway there.

Can you help them out? The survey only takes a few minutes and can be found here. (Survey can be completed only once per person.)

Why are they doing this? As an online leader in all things bargain-hunting, sale-finding, and couponing, they are hoping to take their findings directly to the retailers. They are truly trying to help bridge the gap between what consumers want and what retailers deliver.

So this is your chance to share your thoughts and potentially inpact the future of Black Friday!

There will be a post-Black Friday survey next week, and if you complete BOTH surveys you'll be eligible to win a $50 Gift Card courtesy Hotcouponworld.

Is anyone else annoyed that some retailers are choosing to skip Thanksgiving altogether and go right onto the shopping? Walgreens is sadly one of those retailers offering "Thursday only" deals.
