Blogs/Sites of Note

Lately, I’ve gotten more and more questions about how to find blogs for this store, or that city. And with so many frugal living and coupon blogs available to choose from, I thought I’d share my thoughts today about how to find and select blogs to follow.

Finding Local Coupon Blogs

Probably the easiest way to begin to separate coupon blogs is by determining the local ones from the national ones.

No matter where you’re from, I highly recommend you find a handful of quality, local blogs to follow. These blogs will help you find what’s on sale at the stores in your neighborhood. They may also share events or sales at places unique to your neck of the woods. Three places to find blogs in your area:

  1. The Grocery Gathering. Sort by State or store to find what you’re looking for.
  2. The Frugal Map. Conceptualized by Bargain Briana, this handy tool will help you find bloggers from your State.
  3. Money Saving Mom’s Grocery Page. Money Saving Mom features the grocery matchups of many, many bloggers. Click on the logo to find the store you’re looking for. These posts are highlights only. Click through to the blogger’s list she’s featured for more.

For blogs in the Pacific Northwest area, make sure to additionally stop by my Cool Blogs page.

Finding National Coupon Blogs

National coupon blogs generally receive a sizeable amount of traffic and have de-emphasized local deals. In this way, the majority of readers will be able to take advantage of the deals they share. They may focus on nationally-based chains such as Target and Walgreens. Some, like Money Saving Mom, may additionally have backpages that link to regional deals.

For maximum “deal catching,” I recommend you follow a couple nationally-based coupon blogs in addition to the local blogs you follow. These blogs often get many bloggers sending them hot deals, which means they can be a great “hub” of information.

Some nationally-based blogs I follow include Money Saving Mom, Hip2Save, The Savings Lifestyle, Deal Seeking Mom, and Common Sense with Money.

Finding Coupon Blogs for your Lifestyle

Not all coupon blogs are alike!

Some take a specific angle. Some may be faith-based, some may focus on organic and healthy deals, others still may help you find savings for your pet or baby!

One way to find such blogs is to Google. For instance, you could Google “organic coupon blogger” and find The Thrifty Mama. Another thought is to watch the deals on the nationally-based blogs. When a particular deal catches your eye, follow the “thank you” link through to the blogger that sent it over.

Making the Cut

With so many coupon blogs to follow out there, how can you decide which to follow?

Here are some initial ideas I have for you:

  • Read through the blogger’s last 10-20 posts. This will give you a sensibility of what they like to post about and how they like to share it. Online deals? Local deals? Coupon matchups? Recipes and frugal living? Frequency of posts?
  • Read the blogger’s “About” page. This should hopefully not only give you a sense of who this blogger is, but what you can expect on their blog and their style.
  • Check out the comments left on the blog. Does the blog have a friendly community of folks willing to help one another out? While this isn’t absolutely a “must,” it might be a nice perk! Often, additional ways to work a deal and hot tips can come in the comment section of a coupon blog.
  • Check out the blogger’s Facebook page. Does the blogger do a good job of notifying folks of “hot” deals? Answer questions from followers as they arise? Or are all their updates automated? Again, this might not be a “must,” but if it’s one way you choose to follow blogs, it could be a consideration.

Following the Blogs

Once you have your list of blogs to follow, you have a few ways you could follow them. I personally do two:

  1. Google Reader. Using this free tool, I simply subscribe to the blogs I wish to follow. This aggregates the posts for me so I don’t have to visit each and every blog throughout the day. You can additionally “group” the blogs you follow, but I’ve yet to do this. For instance, you could group the local blogs.
  2. Facebook. I LOVE following blogs on Facebook! If you don’t do this already, I recommend it. You can generally get FAST answers to your question, interact directly with the blogger and other readers. Bloggers will often share nuggets you just won’t find on their blogs including sale alerts. I’ve been known to give away coupons to my Facebook followers on occasion as well!

I hope this post was helpful! It’s not the be-all-end-all definitive way of how you must select and follow blogs, so you may have additional thoughts on this topic. And I’d love to hear ‘em.

How do you decide which coupon blogs to follow? How many do you personally follow? And how do you like to follow them – Google, Facebook, Twitter, visiting each of them, or something else?

Sounds Fun Mom left a really great tip on my Facebook Wall last week: check out Ikea Hacker! So I did just that.

And Ikea Hacker is my pick for my “sites you should know about” feature today. As the name implies, this blog is dedicated to all-things Ikea hacking. Folks have sent in the creative, witty, and sometimes absurd things they’ve done with their Ikea furniture.

For instance:

How about adding a tree branch to make legs for your buffet?

OR

An ultra-sleek multi-media center for your living room?

OR

A dress made out of a blue Ikea shopping bag?

Follow this blog and your Ikea furniture will be sure to look like no one else’s! I love sites like these – sites that encourage you to see something extraordinary in the ordinary.

Do you have a great site you think I should feature on this blog? Right now I’m looking for great, content-rich sites on topics related directly or indirectly to frugal living including home decorating, cooking, and traveling on a budget. If you have a site you think I should share, send it to thecouponproject at hotmail dot com.

Incidentally, for the month of December I will be taking a brief break from this series. I have something up my sleeve that will take every ounce of creative juice in my body, so I will be focusing my effort on that (stay tuned – it should be fun). This series will resume in January.

Every Wednesday, I share a site that I’ve found in my travels around the blogosphere. Sometimes these are directly related to living a frugal lifestyle, and other times, they are just great, quality sites I think you might enjoy knowing about.

Today’s site is one that puts a smile on my face – and has made me laugh – really laugh before.

One night my sister was over and we were having fun searching silly websites, and our searches lead us to Quirky Cookery. The post? A meatloaf shaped like a baby wearing a bacon diaper. The absurdity of preparing this, cooking it in the oven, and then (God forbid) serving it to your guests had the tears rolling down our faces.

I’d nearly forgotten this little post until the other night. I decided to look up that meat baby again and this time, I started poking around Quirky Cookery a little bit more. The site delivers exactly what you’d expect from the title.

Here are just some of the fun posts you’ll find:

:: Making your own glow-in-the-dark food (perfect for Halloween)

:: Constructing a breakfast log cabin

:: How to make a loaf of bread in the shape of a Panda

:: “5 Second Rule” Flowchart (do you have to throw that away?)

:: Bacon Turtle Cheeseburgers

Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next dinner party or whether you want a laugh, I recommend you stop by Quirky Cookery!

You might recall earlier this year I launched what I promised to be a new weekly feature called Sites You Should Know About.

The goal? Share quality, worthwhile sites I’ve found in my journeys around the interwebs. Sites that may have little to do with couponing, but sites that deserved recognition nonetheless. And then something happened. My shoes got worn out from my journeys around the interwebs. I needed a rest, my friends. I was weary.

Many of you have asked about this series, wondering if it was gone for good.  I’m pleased to tell you that I’ve ordered myself a new pair of shoes.

Today’s Pick: Catalog Living

This site truly has nothing to do with being frugal. Except for the fact that it’s free entertainment at its finest.

As the blog’s title implies, the subject matter comes from catalogs – Pottery Barn catalogs, West Elm catalogs, Restoration Hardware catalogs. You know, the sort of catalogs that display perfectly tidy, put together homes that make the rest of us feel ridiculously guilty and jealous at the same time?

Spinning on that them, each post is comprised of a single image taken from a catalog along with a narrative involving fictitious characters (Gary and Elaine and their daughter, Gracie).

In the post titled Purple Mascara Majesty Gary muses how he’s found the perfect gift for Gracie – a picture that “combined her love for our first president along with her favorite band The Cure.” And in another post called Something to Crow About, Gary and Elaine complain how their new vegetarian lifestyle conflicts with the image found on their dinnerware.

If you’re in the market for a humor blog that is witty and fresh and doesn’t contain a vulgarity every other word, stop by Catalog Living.

One of my very favorite bloggers, Amy Andrews from Blogging with Amy has released an e-book. And it’s on Time Management!

Tell Your Time is all about how to set long-term goals for your life and then tackle them in “bite-sized steps.” If you struggle with the daily grind and want to make sure you’re not losing focus on life’s bigger goals, check her e-book out. This e-book will apply whether or not you are a blogger.

Right now, it’s on sale for $5 $7 when you use coupon code YAYFORLAUNCH INTHECLUB at checkout. According to her post, the code was supposedly good for yesterday only, but I tried it right now, and it’s still working! But hurry – the price is going to go back up to $12 at any point. UPDATE: I just heard from Amy. This price is good through today after all!

I whole-heartedly believe in Amy and her advice. She has a very clear, easy-to-understand writing style (something I’m very big on). You can check out her e-book HERE. And if you have a blog or are thinking of starting one, I can’t recommend Blogging with Amy enough. She covers everything from blogging etiquette, monetization strategies, trusty tech advice, and more.

Maybe it’s because fall is in the air, or maybe it’s because I’m finally growing up, but I’ve been on a kick to get my house in order.

Those of you that have had the scary experience pleasure of visiting my home know I have some issues. I lack storage space. Stuff ends up on the floor. Stacked on the counter. You get the idea. .I only realized recently how disorganized things had become when a friend several months ago commented upon entering “wow, it looks clean in here!” like she’d never seen the floors of my home previously.

Several months ago now, I kicked off a “sites you should know about” feature as a way to shake things up a bit in your Google reader. I’ve been on the hunt for quality blogs that are complementary to us coupon bloggers. And lately, it seems I’ve been on a decorating DIY kick. I’ve introduced you to Knock-off Wood and last week, Thrifty Decor Chick, and today I have another awesome design blog to share…Nesting Place.

Her tagline resonated with me: “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” If you want a Pottery Barn style house but have more of a Goodwill budget, this blog is for you. It’s all about learning to love the home you have and how to make it look how you want it for less.  I love how The Nester (as the blogger goes by) found this amazing dresser for $15 at a garage sale and then finished it! Very inspiring.

She also has some great hacks, too. For instance, she decided to make her own Martha Stewart fall wreath. Total cost? $5.

This is the sort of site I like to cozy up to on a quiet evening (you know, after the kids are asleep?) with a cup of cocoa. And then DEVOUR. If you’d like to do the same, I recommend you start with Best of the Nest where The Nester will introduce you to some of the meatiest things her site has to offer. Enjoy!

Know of a site you think I should feature for this series? Please email me at thecouponproject at hotmail dot com. I’m primarily looking for sites complementary to the frugal lifestyle, such as cooking, DIY, frugal homemaking, etc.
