Giving Opportunities

It’s the annual Stamp out Hunger drive this Saturday, May 12th!

To participate, all you need to do is leave a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox. The USPS will be collecting the food and delivering it to local food banks! I was at my post office earlier this week and noticed they have some places you can swing by some extra food there, too.

Good choices include canned items, peanut butter, bottled juices, pasta, cereal, and rice. Please don’t include expired items or items that could spoil. For more information, you can visit the Stamp out Hunger website or Facebook page. Surely some of my couponers out there can spare a bag of food from their stockpiles?

Here’s a promotion I’m excited to share because it’s a win-win: donate a jar of peanut butter and skate for free at Tiffany’s Skate Inn (Puyallup, WA) this weekend (May 4th – May 6th). I know many of my couponer/stockpilers out there must certainly have some peanut butter they could spare!

I’ve been told that admission includes skate rentals, so this is a fabulous deal! Even better, it benefits the community because peanut butter is one of those items that food banks are always in need.

This peanut butter drive is part of a Stick it to Hunger contest running between Puyallup and Sumner and the goal is to raise 4,000 jars by May 11th. For more information, you can visit the Facebook event page that Tiffany’s has set up.

What do you think of this idea?

Don’t forget that my pal Desiree is kicking off an online auction TODAY to raise funds to bring home her precious little guy from China. If you didn’t read the story, you can go back and do so here.

There are all sorts of wonderful items up for bid. Here are just a few:

  • Full YEAR of lawn maintenance.
  • Custom cakes.
  • Knitting lessons.
  • Personal training sessions.
  • And yes, a one-hour private coupon class taught by yours truly!
The auction starts today and runs through Monday. Please head to The Adoption Seed to view the items and place your bid. Please note that many of these services are locally based (So King/Pierce County – Washington).

Let’s make this happen!

In celebration of National Pancake day, you can get a get free short stack of buttermilk pancakes at IHOP on February 28th!  If you are able to donate a little money, it will go to a great – the Children’s Miracle Network. However, the pancakes are free, with no strings attached. Valid at participating IHOP restaurants.

They have done this promotion for several years running now. If you want, you can schedule a free celebrity wake-up reminder. You can choose from Marie Osmond, David Archuleta, Jordin Sparks, and more. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks, Thrifty NW Mom!

It seems so fitting that today – Valentine’s Day – I get to share with you the love my friend (Desiree) has for a special little boy. You see, Desiree is on her way to Mommyhood via adoption. And very soon, she will be bringing home a beautiful boy from China who has Down’s Syndrome to be her son. Her story and heart to become a Mommy has so touched and moved me. As a Mommy myself, I know what a blessed journey this is and cannot wait for her to experience it, too.

I encourage you to read more about Desiree’s story at my friend, Cassandra Hamilton’s site. You can additionally follow the story as it unfolds at Desiree’s blog, The Adoption Seed.

Any of you who have walked through the adoption process understand that this doesn’t come without a steep cost. One of the ways Desiree will be fundraising will be an online auction which will be held on her site starting this Friday and running through Monday. I’m pleased to have donated a private, one-hour couponing class to this worthy cause. The class will be for up to 12 people, and I will visit you at your location in a radius of up to 30 minutes from Federal Way. The class will cover everything you need to know to get started – stockpiling, budgeting, coupon policies, and coupon techniques.

I will remind you again when the auction is live. Thank you for your consideration!

I wanted to provide another update and a final call for help for families that originally entered the Making Holiday Wishes Come True contest, sponsored by Fred Meyer.

For those just joining me, I ran a contest last month and asked “if you could use a $250 gift card from Fred Meyer, please write to me!” Many people wrote, and two winners were selected to each win a $250 gift card, three others won $50 gift cards, and then Fred Meyer generously came back to sponsor 10 more families with $25 gift cards, bringing their total donation to $900!

Inspired by Fred Meyer’s generosity and the families’ stories, some of you began asking how you could help some of the other families that had initially reached out to me. So I have been working behind the scenes on maintaining a list, and matching families needing help with readers who can help them.

As of this post, a total of 32 Coupon Project families have received some sort of help, including 15 of these from Fred Meyer! I want to personally thank everyone who has taken the time to give! It’s been such a blessing to receive emails like these in my inbox:

I got the card today!  ONce again, thank YOU so much and THANKS to the family that was willing to help! You don’t know how much this helps out with our Christmas! :)

And…

You have no idea how much we appreciate this!

And…

I really can not say thank you enough. I will pay-it-forward throughout the holiday season as much as I can.

It’s not too late to help

I am beginning to realize that it’s likely I won’t be able to help each of the 32 families I have left on my list, but I would like to help as many as possible. I have gotten a few heartbreaking emails lately from some of the families that have originally emailed me, and from a few others that have trickled in.

Given how close we are to Christmas at this point, I think it’s best that I work to match those that want to help directly with a family in need (vs. having you send me the money/gift cards and have me re-route it). If you are interested in helping make a fellow Coupon Project reader’s holiday season a bit brighter, please email me at angela @ thecouponproject dot com. My request is that there be a donation of at least $25 per family – I do like the idea of keeping to Fred Meyer gift cards, since that how the contest was originally structured, but if you have something else in mind, just email me. A couple readers have given in other ways that have been tremendously helpful, too!

If you’d like to give in another way – or if you’re in need of help yourself, I’d like to remind you of the post I recently put together called Get a Hand, Give a Hand. There are some resources as well as volunteer opportunities you might be interested to learn about!

Thanks again for considering how you can make a difference this holiday season!
