The Pirates of the Caribbean Ride. (C’mon, don’t you just smell that cool, mustiness?)
The Jungle Cruise.
I have fond memories of my dad piling us into our sedan with a trunk crammed full of suitcases, headed down I-5 for a two-day journey to Disneyland. Now that I have a family of my own, I was excited to give my kids the opportunity to experience Disneyland. (And in case you’re wondering, yes, they loved it and regularly ask when we’ll return!)
A couple weeks ago, I was given a special invite to attend a Disney Social Media Moms on the Road Celebration in Bellevue and of course, I said yes!
Walking into the conference room made me want to be in Disneyland all the more! They were playing all my favorite classic Disney songs, and of course, there were Mickey balloons everywhere.
We were treated to a delicious breakfast, and then we got the scoop about some Disney updates from Michele Himmelberg, Public Relations Director for Disneyland. As you might be aware, there have been a lot of improvements to the Disney Parks recently including the expansion of Fantasyland at Walt Disney World and the grand opening of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure last year. We also heard about Star Wars Weekends and I am pretty sure I heard an awesome rumor that there is a seven dwarfs themed mining ride attraction coming in the future! (How cool would that be?)
I love how there are always new things to look forward to at the Disney Parks!
See the gal pictured above? Her name is Erin Glover, and I have a secret to tell you about her. I want her job. Seriously.
Erin blogs for Disney at the Disney Parks Blog. ‘Nuff said! Do make sure to follow that blog though for current news regarding all the Disney Parks worldwide.
Attendees were then treated to keynote speaker Mindee Doney, founder of Boogie Wipes. I have to admit, I was prepared for a Cinderella story of a mompreneur who came up with a simple idea that solved a problem and through a lot of hard work and fancy networking became a huge success and you can do it too if you just try.
But that’s not what we got.
Instead, we got the humbling and cautionary account of someone who did in fact become quite successful, but also burnt out in the process. Even worse, the business cost Ms. Doney her marriage and didn’t leave her as financially secure as she’d hoped.
This was definitely not the keynote presentation I had expected to hear, but I was so blessed she had the courage to share her story. At one point, she displayed the following picture her father had given her:
As a business owner and a mom, I can definitely sympathize with trying to keep the balance between success in business and keeping your family foremost. I’m so grateful that Disney provided a platform for Ms. Doney to share her very real story. (And if you’re reading, Ms. Doney – I wish you the very best on your new adventures, whatever they may be!)
We also had the opportunity to hear from four mom business owners. They shared their stories and did a panel style Q & A with attendees. The key theme that comes up whenever you’re talking about being a mom business owner is how to find that balance. (But then again, maybe that’s life in general, isn’t it?)
All told, it was a lovely conference and I was tickled to have been a part of it! Thanks, Disney!

Incidentally, we’re hoping to make another Disneyland trip within the year! I’ll be sure to keep you in the loop on more money-saving ideas for making a dream trip like this possible. As usual, I’ll keep you posted on any Disney promotions I spot as well as airfare deals.
What about you – do you have any Disney Parks trips on the horizon?
