So I have seen this blueberry park in Federal Way before, off 356th Street. After the recent success I had with Charlotte’s Blueberry Park in Tacoma, I thought I’d check them out. After all, if it was another source of free food – I wanted to share it with you. The park is actually an extension of the Hylebos in Federal Way, which I’ve written about previously (DO check it out if you haven’t – it’s awesome!).
While I adore and recommend the Hylebos, the blueberry park? Was such a disappointment! As you can see from the picture above, it’s completely overgrown with weeds and unkempt. I had a hard time just walking through the bushes due to the huge sticker bushes. (So no, I don’t recommend taking the kids here.)
As I wandered through the bushes (and weeds), I had a growing question….
There was nary a blueberry in site! I’m not sure what the deal is – if the weeds have stunted the bushes, if the birds had eaten them, if they’d been picked over, or if I’m just blind as a bat and need to get my eyes fixed. (The latter is definitely a possibility.)
What you’ll mostly find at this “blueberry park” is a park full of cottony-looking weeds. I did a little digging online and I found that there is a “clean up” day scheduled for Saturday, October 26th from 10 am – 2 pm. For more information or to show up and help restore this place a bit, you can check out the posting at VolunteerMatch.org. It would sure be neat to see this site taken care of a bit – I can only imagine how nice it must have been at one point.
After about five minutes I decided to leave. It was just then I spied this:
Anyone have anything else to add about this place? Are you aware of any local places to forage for fruit or other goodies you think I should mention here at the blog?
