Safeway

I’m hearing multiple reports that Safeway and it affiliate stores (such as Dominck’s) have their Nivea Lip Care reduced to just $0.99 through July 26th.

Use the $2/2 Nivea Lip Care printable coupon to score two for free. Or, print out the coupon twice to get four for free!

According to the Safeway Coupon Policy, they should be able to reduce down the coupon to make it work. (I do recommend printing and bringing this with you just in case.)

Thanks, Common Sense with Money!

I wanted to share with you two deals that are ONLY good through tomorrow.

Up first: Post Cereal at QFC

At QFC, select varieties of Post Cereal are just $1 each with your QFC card!

Post Cereal $1 (limit 10)
$1/2 ANY Post cereal from 5/16 SmartSource (expires 6/27 – that’s Sunday!)
$1/2 KIDS Post cereal from 5/16 SmartSource (expires 6/27 – that’s Sunday!)
Bottom line: $0.50 each!

Obviously, rainchecks aren’t going to do you any good here as the coupons are only good through Sunday. I do consider $0.50 a box stock-up worthy, so if you have any of these coupons laying around…use ‘em or lose ‘em!

Up second: cheap Goldfish at Safeway

The deal on Goldfish is ONLY good today (Saturday) and Sunday. Even without the $0.50/1 coupon, I think $0.88 is a stellar stock-up price on this item!

Goldfish $0.88 (limit 10)
$0.50/1 printable coupon
Bottom line: $0.38 each!

A huge thanks to Maygan of Maybe Frugal for tipping me off to Safeway’s new coupon policy!

Here are a few highlights:

  • You may NOT present two coupons for a buy one, get one free sale.
  • You MAY present a valid Catalina from another retailer (think Walgreens Register Rewards, Albertsons’ Catalinas, etc.).
  • You MAY present manufacturer’s coupons with another retailer’s logo printed on them. (Make sure they are truly manufacturer’s coupons first!)
  • Overage is NOT permitted.
  • Internet coupons ARE accepted so long as they scan and do not appear blurry or distorted.

It also appears they’ve done away with the silly policy about not accepting printable coupons that exceed 50% of an item’s value.

While I’m still not a huge fan of couponing at Safeway, I definitely think this is a step in the right direction! I HIGHLY recommend you print and carry this policy with you when shopping at Safeway. I sincerely hope they do a better job of informing all personnel of this and work towards becoming a coupon-friendlier store. And hey Safeway, if you’re reading this, please consider adding your doubler program to Western Washington.

Thanks, Maygan!

Robin participated in some of the Safeway deals this week. Check out what she did:

Before sales or coupons, her total was $185. AFTER sales and coupons she paid only $51.09, a savings rate of 73%!

She concludes: “Yes, Coupons DO work.  I NEVER would have thought this was possible without your blog. THANK YOU.”

Awesome shop, Robin!! If you want to get in on some of the Safeway deals, you’d need to do them today. While I don’t do weekly Safeway matchups, you can get in on the deals over at Frugal Living NW.

Who else had fun shopping their “Buy 8, Save $4″ Mix & Match promotion this week?

Some of you that are just joining me have commented that I don’t post Safeway deals each week. You’re right, I don’t. Here’s why.

1. I am only one person. Truth be told, there are lots of stores in my area: Fred Meyer, Albertsons, QFC, Safeway, Top Food… but each store takes considerable time to do matchups for each week. I realized early on that two stores was my limit. I wanted to be deliberate about which stores I wanted to follow. For grocery stores, I think Albertsons offers consistently better stockup promotions. And for great deals on healthful, everyday groceries, I like Fred Meyer. I feel these stores complement one another in what they have to offer.

2. Safeway gave me headaches. It seems that if deals don’t work…they are Safeway deals. I’ve had more readers leave comments and email me about their Safeway trips gone awry than any other grocery store. There seems to be little to no consistency in how they handle coupons from store to store, and even within stores. On a personal note, the very first time I tried to use coupons at a Safeway, I was belittled by a cashier who told me to “read the coupon!” Guess what? She was wrong, but since I was new, I ended up leaving discouraged and frustrated. A few months later, I had an equally frustrating encounter with a cashier who rolled her eyes at me at another Safeway store. Not good.

3. Safeway has a wacky, ever-changing coupon policy. Did you know technically you’re not supposed to use a printable coupon if it exceeds 50% of the item’s value? Don’t believe me? Read this. I’ve also heard of cashiers randomly telling customers that they will only accept ONE kind of a coupon per shopping trip (so if you want to buy 2 cereals with 2 coupons…you wouldn’t be able to do so). Their “Super Coupons” frustrate me since they require a minimum purchase, and I recently heard of how a local Safeway harrassed a couponer – pulling her aside simply for using printable coupons and questioned her if she was practicing coupon fraud. When I tried emailing Safeway awhile back about their policy, they were evasive. While I understand not all Safeway stores are like this, I tire of hearing these stories. Bottom line? Safeway is not reliable for being coupon friendly. And personally, I’m not a huge fan. Since this is my experience and my blog, this is what I’ve decided to do.

4. Our Safeway stores don’t double coupons. Many other Safeway stores do, ours don’t.

5. Safeway’s prices are high. In general, I feel your coupons can be better matched up at other area stores.

I completely understand and fully expect that not everyone reading this will agree with me. And that’s OK! There are many wonderful local blogs that regularly cover Safeway matchups. I’m just not one of them. That being said, I am known the feature the occasional Safeway deal – such as the Ziploc one currently running. The same way I’ll occasionally mention a Top Foods, QFC, or Summit Trading deal.

What about you? Do you like Safeway or not? Have you had issues with their coupon policy, or is your store coupon friendly?

Angela over at Frugal Living NW gave me the heads-up on this pretty sweet deal at Safeway…and it runs sometime through June, so you’ll have ample time to stock up!

Ziploc Containers on sale $1.99 when you buy 4: $7.96
Use (2) $1.50/1 $1.50/2 coupons from 5/16 SmartSource
Pay $4.96, get (2) $2 off-your-next-order Catalina coupons
Bottom line: $0.24 each!

You could then “roll” the Catalina coupons, like this:

Buy 4 more Ziploc Containers: $7.96
Use (2) $1.50/1 coupons from 5/16 SmartSource
Use (2) $2 Catalinas from transaction #1
Pay $0.96, get (2) $2 off-your-next-order Catalina coupons

Angela suggests if you live in an area where Safeway doubles that you use the $0.55/1 coupon from the 5/16 SmartSource instead – and in that case, they’d work out to FREE.

See her post on FREE Ziploc Containers for more information.

The 2-lb Tillamook blocks of cheese are just $3.99 at Safeway this week – and there is NO limit. The fact that there is no limit on this low price is highly unusual and definitely stockpile worthy if you like this cheese as much as I do! You can freeze these babies, too.

For more Safeway deals, see Coupon Connections NW.

Lipton

UPDATE: a number of people are having difficulties with this deal. I'd advise against trying it at this point! Sorry!!

Amber at Coupon Connections NW emailed me a pretty fantastic Safeway deal:

Lipton Tea $0.99
Load $1/1 Shortcuts.com ecoupon to your Safeway Club Card
Bottom line: FREE!

Because the coupon value exceeds the item value by a penny, I'd make sure to throw in at least one small "filler" item to make this transaction work. OR, you could simply add
one of these Safeway deals to your order.

Thanks, Amber!

Safeway

Another fabulous movie ticket offer!

Reader Rebecca wrote to me to say that at Safeway, select boxes of Pop Tarts are just $1. You'll want to look for specially marked packages. With the codes from 5 boxes, you can submit for 1 FREE movie ticket or 2 FREE coupons for more Pop Tarts! She does write that you'll need to have 5 different flavors in order for this deal to work.

Pop Tarts $1
Buy 5 specially marked packages
$1.25/3 coupon from 3/28 Red Plum
Bottom line: $3.75 for 5 boxes plus the free movie ticket!

Thanks for the heads up, Rebecca!

Dontfret

Reader Danna just emailed me a great tip I wanted to share with you!

First, you'll want to go HERE and print off the $3/2 Suave deodorant coupon. (By the way, I was completely unaware of this site – there are several other high-value printable coupons for other deodorant brands you'll want to check out – including Dove and Degree.)

Danna found the Suave 2-pack on sale at her Safeway (in Maple Valley, WA) for just $3.29. She was able to use her $3/2 coupon and pay just $0.29 for both deodorants – works out to just under $0.15 apiece.

Incidentally, what do you think is a deal-worthy price for deodorant? You can occasionally get it for free by pairing store sales with coupons, but I'd say anything under $0.50 is deal-worthy and anything under $0.25 is stock-up worthy. I generally like to have about 2-3 on hand in my stock – much more than that becomes clutter. Thoughts?
