On my Saturday post about stockpiling, reader Karen asked a great question:
We go through a lot of breakfast & I stocked up last month on all the good sales. Many many boxes. I keep the unopened boxes on shelves in a separate room. They aren't near any other food or opened boxes. Do I need to be worried about any kind pantry bugs getting in cereal?
I really had never considered this before, and didn't have an answer. So this morning, I called a local pest control company, Sprague Pest Solutions. One of their knowledgeable team members took the time to share with me some simple ideas for keeping your stockpile safe. You'll be glad to know most if it is plain, common sense.
2 – Ventilation and rotation. Don't just let items sit and sit. Switch things around, get some air circulating around items.
5 – Insect and pest monitors and traps. Apparently there are small spider and bug traps available. These can help alert you if you have them in the first place. I was able to find one just for pantry pests available on Amazon today for about $5.
