Today’s Adventures in Bulk Foods selection is another one of those mixes you might not realize your bulk food section contains: hummus mix.
Yes, hummus mix.
Now I had pretty much no idea you could buy hummus as a dry mix. I’m used to buying it already prepared. Or, I suppose you could make your own using chickpeas, but I’d never done this either.
At WinCo Foods, I found this mix priced at $4.65 a pound. This seems kind of spendy to me, considering how hummus does go on sale from time to time. However, keep in mind that hummus mix online is much more expensive.
It’s a bit tricky to compare apples to apples as this is a dry mix versus prepared. There are a few reasons I thought buying it in this dry mix might make sense:
- if not everyone in your house is a hummus eater and it’s difficult to finish off a container of prepared hummus
- you just need a little for a recipe
- you only eat it occasionally, in small amounts and would like an easy way to keep it on hand
I was curious to try it.
All you do is mix equal parts hummus and water (in this case, 1 1/2 cups each) together. Finish with a couple tablespoons of olive oil. It took all of oh, 30 seconds.
So how did it taste? It was decent! It even had a little spice to it, which was nice. But I wouldn’t write home about it. I do think it would be good to have on hand for the above scenarios.
Have you ever tried making hummus from a dry mix before? I would also love to hear what you think about the cost. How much does it cost to prepare it from scratch? Does this seem like a savings to you, or not?
