It’s about this time of year that we see grocery stores run gift card promotions. I am aware of two stores in our local area that are running such promotions and wanted to make you aware of them.
At Safeway right now, you can get $10 off your next shopping trip when you spend $100 or more on participating gift cards. This offer is valid starting 11/19 (today!) and it runs through 12/9. While I’m unaware of what the participating gift cards are, the ad has a really nice selection displayed including Amazon, Best Buy, Macy’s, Lowe’s, Regal Cinemas and Toys ‘R Us.
Also note: the $10 coupon you received must be redeemed on a grocery purchase of $25 or more.
I popped in to my local Albertsons today and noticed they were also running an offer. Get $20 off your next grocery purchase when you spend $100 or more in participating gift cards. This offer is good from 11/19 – 11/27 only. While the dollar amount of this promotion is higher than Safeway’s, it would appear the list of participating retailers is much more limited:
In case you can’t read that, the cards include Applebee’s, IHOP, Lowe’s, MasterCard, Spa Finder, VISA, iTunes and Amex. In years past, the participating retailer list has been much more generous! (You might recall I leveraged a similar deal a couple years back to buy Southwest Gift Cards, broke the whole thing out into transactions, and scored about $120 in free groceries). I suspect that they’re onto us smart shoppers!
While the VISA, MasterCard, and Amex cards might be of interest, remember that these usually come with an additional fee to load. You’ll need to take that into consideration.
Your $20 coupon can then be redeemed on a grocery purchase of $50 or more.
Here are some of my best tips for leveraging either of these offers:
- Purchase your gift card(s) first. In many cases, you may be able to turn around and redeem it immediately on the rest of your grocery purchase, in a second transaction.
- Use your coupon to purchase items for your Thanksgiving dinner. Albertsons has some HOT deals right now that would work really well with this offer (I’m getting ready to share more about my amazing trip today soon!).
- Use your gift cards for holiday shopping. If you already know you’ll be spending $100 or more on Amazon this year, why not get a coupon out of it, I say!
