Last year, I had such fun playing Oprah and coming up with my list of 10 Favorite Things for 2014, I decided to do it again!
Why should you care about what I bought? Well first – when it comes to buying things for myself, you should know I can be pretty cheap. Meaning, I actually don’t buy a lot of things for myself. The things I end up purchasing usually only come after extensive hemming and hawing.
After much consideration, here are the 10 best things I purchased in 2015 and can heartily recommend to you!
Item #1: Believe Journal (~$15, Amazon)
I purchased this journal back in the spring as a way to log my running. Previously, I’d just printed out a monthly calendar page and jotted my schedule on it. This is so much better! In addition to ample space to journal your daily running, there are pages to plan your goals, the logistics and reviews of your races, and an annual calendar. Peppered throughout the journal are helpful articles on everything from body image to nutrition and more, by pro women runners. I absolutely love this journal and recommend it to all my girlfriends that run. It would make an amazing gift!
Item #2: Nuun (~ $11-13 for a 4-pack, Amazon)
I discovered Nuun this year and am crazy about this stuff! It’s basically a little disc that you throw in a bottle of 16 oz water that flavors it and provides electrolytes. The flavors are amazing, and I love that it’s very low in sugar and calories. It’s a great alternative to other sports drinks that can be high in both! One tube of 12 discs will run you about $7-8 in a grocery store, but you can score a 4-pack on Amazon for about $11-13 right now. In talking to representatives from Nuun at races I’ve participated in, they agree Amazon is generally the best place to score a deal. It’s great during or after a long run or hard workout, or even if you’re just trying to get more water in and prefer a bit of flavor.
Item #3: Canon Rebel T5 DSLR (~$500, Amazon)
I’d thought about getting a nice camera for awhile, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to stomach the price! While this camera was among the bigger purchases I made this year, my only regret was not buying it sooner! It’s amazing for any number of subjects – kids, sports, food, gardening, nature, landscapes, cityscapes, and more. I also love that I was able to figure it out relatively quickly too.
Item #4: Shower Body Wipes (~$7, Amazon)
This might seem like an odd thing to add to my list, but allow me to explain! In the summer, I was invited to participate on a Hood to Coast Relay team. In case you’re unaware, this is a 200-mile relay divvied up among 12 runners. We all ran 3 times (aka “legs”). This meant running and then hopping back in the van all sweaty to wait until the next time to run. I discovered these wipes through that process. You can find them online or at most grocery stores (or a similar brand). They’d also be great for after sports activities, workouts, hiking, or other times you want to freshen up, but a shower isn’t an option.
Item #5: LG Top-Load Wash Machine (~$700, Amazon)
After my fancy front-load wash machine broke down yet again this fall, we decided to buy a new one. I arrived at this LG top-load machine and let me tell you, I’ve absolutely LOVED it. There is no agitator in the drum, so you just throw all the clothes right in! It holds so much too – including my huge comforter. It’s HE, it’s quiet, it’s quick. I know it’s pretty trivial, but it plays a sweet tune at the end when the load is finished! The current price on Amazon is about $50 less than we paid, too! We also bought the matching dryer and it’s been pretty awesome as well. I’m glad we bit the bullet on this one.
Item #6: Oiselle Mac Roga Running Shorts (~$30-44, Amazon)
I bought these running shorts over the summer and LOVE them! They are light and keep you cool. They stay in place, which is kind of incredible, seeing how short they are! They have built in underwear and a pocket with a zipper, so you can store your key or other small item. They are my go-to short during hot weather runs.
Item #7: The Man in the Rockefeller Suit (~$10, Amazon)
This was my favorite book for 2015! It’s the true story of a serial imposter – a man who managed to convince many people that he was someone he wasn’t. It culminates with him convincing a number of people – including a woman who would become his wife – that he was a Rockefeller. This book was hard to put down!
Item #8: Tinkertopia (Tacoma)
So this isn’t so much an item – it’s a place – but this is my list and I figure I can include what I want! We discovered this awesome “creative reuse center” back in the spring and have been back a few times since. For $7, you can “tinker” to your heart’s content. This fee includes any materials you can find back in their tinker space along with 90 minutes to use their tables, tools, and supplies. My daughter begs to go here all the time. It’s located on Pacific, downtown Tacoma. Intrigued? Read my full Tinkertopia write-up from earlier this year.
Item #9: HP Envy 4520 Wireless Printer (~$75, Amazon)
About a month ago, my printer went kaput. Turns out, it’s almost just cheaper to buy a new printer than it is to try to repair one! I opted for the HP Envy 4520 Wireless printer and love it! The setup took me about all of 10 minutes (including pulling it out of the box). I love that it’s sleek, multi-functional, and doesn’t clutter my space with wires. You can also print from your mobile devices, which is a total plus.
Item #10: Head Running Gloves (~$13, Costco)
Last month, I picked up these Head running gloves for $10 (see my Costco post if you missed it!). Previously, I’d just use the little stretchy $1 gloves I’d buy at the store. I must say – I much prefer these! They keep my hands warm, but have thin fingertips so you can use mobile devices or grip items without having to take them off. I actually just wore them during the Seattle Half Marathon last weekend and they kept my hands warm, yet never got all sweaty or gross. They also clip together which is a plus when you’re throwing them in the wash. Even if you’re not a runner, I’d recommend these – in fact, I find myself pulling them on pretty much anytime I’m headed outside now!
