Best Tax Software Deals 2022

1. TurboTax

TurboTax is the most widely used brand of tax software in America.

If your tax return is simple, you can file for FREE right now if you get it done by 2/15/22. A simple tax return is Form 1040 only. You’ll be able to file your federal and state returns for free if you qualify.

Otherwise, save $20 on TurboTax Deluxe if you file by 1/31/22. The Deluxe version is the most commonly used TurboTax product. It’s the one my husband and I have used for fifteen years.

2. FreeTaxUSA

Another discount option is FreeTax USA. This website offers a free federal tax return and a $14.99 state return.

It’s free for everyone, whether you’re using the Basic, Advanced, Premium, or Self-Employed version.

Upgrade to the Deluxe Edition for $6.99 for priority support with live chat, unlimited amended returns, and audit assist.

3. TaxSlayer

TaxSlayer has a free federal and state return option for those who only need the 1040 form.

Otherwise, their other versions are very reasonably priced, with the Classic version priced at just $17.95 (state additional). Pay a little extra for Ask a Tax Pro and live chat options.

BONUS: Take 35% off your order with coupon code SAVE35 (exp 4/18/22). With the coupon code, you’ll pay as low as $11.67 for the Classic Version!

4. H&R Block

H&R Block also offers a Free Edition that is best for first-time filers and those who qualify to use the simplest tax return forms. If you qualify, you’ll be able to file both your federal and state returns for free.

If you need a more complicated version of their tax software, be sure to check Amazon for any deals on software downloads.

5. TaxACT

TaxAct offers a free option for simple tax returns, but you’ll pay $34.95 to file your state return.

Their deluxe version is just $24.95 for federal returns, which is a big savings over a similar version of TurboTax and/or H&R Block.

TaxACT offers free live advice from CPAs and tax experts for all filers who use their program.

6. IRS Free File

Of course, you can always file on the IRS website itself. If your income is below $72,000, you’ll get free tax prep software; if it’s above $72,000, you’ll get free file fillable forms.

7. Military OneSource

This service is brought to you by United Way.

9. LibertyTax

LibertyTax is best known for their in-person tax preparation, but you can also file online by yourself or with a little help from their tax pros.

Basic tax returns start at $24.95 right now ($20 off the regular price). State returns are available for $36.95.

10. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide

If you can’t pay for online tax software or don’t want to file online, be sure to check out AARP Foundation Tax-Aide – the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service.

They specifically help low- to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those 50 and older.

11. VITA and TCE

The Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help. VITA helps people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers.

  1. USAA members who access Turbotax through USAA’s site are offered a discount. The amount varies, I believe based on the forms and functions you choose.

  2. I have used Tax Act the last two years and plan to use it again this year. I use the free version and it is very easy and user friendly. I like that it walks you through everything on a return so it is hard to miss anything. You do have to deal with continual pop ups trying to get you to buy the upgrade but I just click No.
