I just got back from our family vacation a couple days ago (I’ll make sure to post about it later this week!), and I wanted to share a pretty amazing product I discovered because I’ve got to believe it’s going to help someone out there. A little about me: I sometimes suffer from ear pressure issues when flying. It’s kind of hit or miss – some flights go off without a hitch, others are pretty darn painful. To the point that it’s kind of made me dread air travel!
After searching the Internet for answers from people will similar issues, I stumbled on this product: Ear Planes. They are basically special ear plugs you wear during your flight. I’m going to be honest, it sounded like a total gimmick. However, I was extremely impressed by the hundreds of positive Amazon reviews! I decided I had nothing to lose, so I purchased a couple pairs at my grocery store just prior to our family’s vacation. (They recommend you only wear them 1-2 times each as they lose their effectiveness as they get dirty. However, some reviewers have worn them beyond that without issue.)
Come the day of our flight, I was pretty darn panicky because I’d been having some sinus issues and I had one ear that was partially plugged! Not the way you want to go into a flight. I ended up taking Afrin plus used the Ear Planes. Now, according to the instructions, you can use them just during the ascent and/or descent, but since ours was a fairly short flight, I just rode with them the entire time. Guys, I HAD NO EAR PRESSURE ISSUES. I could not believe it – they totally worked!
When we went to fly home a couple days ago, I tried using the Ear Planes and did not use Afrin. I wanted to know if they’d work on their own. Same deal – they totally worked, no ear pressure issues! Now the ear plugs are a bit large and at points, uncomfortable (though nothing to write home about). However, that is personally a price I’m willing to pay instead of the pain associated with not being able to pop by ears. If I take a longer flight in the future, I’ll probably just wear them for the descent.
To sum up, here’s why I love this product:
- It’s non-medicated. There’s no prescription to get or side effects to worry about.
- They are inexpensive! I really think you’ve got nothing to lose to try these if you suffer from ear pressure issues.
- It works. Honestly, having discovered this product has made me feel so much better about air travel in the future!
- It reduces noise. As an added bonus, these puppies reduce airplane noise. Sweet!
Now: the price. I paid about $6 per pair at my grocery store. So to be clear: yes, you should be able to find them at your local grocery or drugstore. (I found them in the area that ear plugs were sold.) However, the best deal I’m seeing is on Amazon (of course!). Right now, you can pay $19.99 for a 5-pack of Ear Planes with free Prime shipping – that works out to just $3.99 per pair! This would be great if you travel a lot or have other family members that suffer from this issue. Just note that prices on Amazon can change without warning, so it’s possible the price may be different if you’re finding my post later when you click the link. It’s also worth mentioning that Amazon sells a special version of Ear Planes for kids and those with smaller ears. This is a product I’ve personally not seen in stores and something you might want to consider having on hand if you’ve got an upcoming plane ride with kids!
I hope this post and product recommendation helps someone! I’d love to hear your stories, too. Do you suffer from this issue? Have you ever tried Ear Planes? Leave a comment below!
