How I saved 70% using Safeway.com (and how you can, too!)

I’ve been hearing about some crazy deals folks are getting using Safeway.com’s delivery service. I decided to give the whole thing a try – from start to finish – so I can share with you how it works, too.

Here’s what I just got delivered this afternoon:

I paid just $11.13 shipped for everything above – and I saved $41.13 (82%)!

Ready to do something equally as cool?

:: Set up a new account at Safeway.com. (It will tell you if they offer delivery to your area or not.)
:: Once you’re in, add $50 of items to your cart.
:: At checkout, use coupon code CJSAVINGS and you’ll receive $15 off AND free delivery!

Now here’s where this deal gets super cool…

You can use the $15 coupon code on top of current buy one, get one free sales! You can find these by going to Safeway.com, and then clicking on the “Online Savings” tab and then “buy one, get one free specials.” Click on the specific categories to see what you’ll find on buy one, get one free in that department. Here’s specifically what I did:

(4) Nestle Cocoa @ $2.79 each
(4) Better Oats @ $2.99 each
(2) Bagels @ $4.79 each
(2) Dole Fruit @ $4.39 each
(2) Jimmy Dean Sausage @ $5.39
SubtotaL: $52.26

When I entered the code CJSAVINGS, $15 and the delivery fee came off immediately, like this:

Then I was able to select my window for delivery. Please note that on the buy one, get one free items it will tell you what date your item has to be delivered by in order to get that discount.

I selected Thursday between 1 and 3. My order was here before 1:30.

If you’re like me, you’re going to feel a little weird placing your order before you see all the “buy one, get one free” discounts. You’ll be given an “estimated total” with the $15 off, but NOT the buy one, get one free discounts. Do NOT panic. These discounts will be on your final receipt, which comes with your bill. (This is one of the reasons I wanted to try this out myself first!) I can assure you, they all came off correctly. Just make sure you place multiples of 2 in your cart for any buy one, get one free promotions.

The CJSAVINGS code is good through December 31, 2010 ONLY and ONLY to first-time Safeway.com customers. In my opinion, the cheapest bet is to combine this code with the buy one, get one free sales. However, you may wish to use it for other items as well.ย Just make sure your total is $50. Head to Safeway.com and let me know what you think!

  1. I used to do the delivery serivce but stopped awhile back. They will give you same offer if you are a returning customer

  2. If you’re not a first time customer (I use it when I plan parties for someone else and they don’t care about getting a good deal), check the retailmenot.com site for coupon codes before you check out. This is a good policy any time you do anything online but I’ve gotten a few bucks off or free shipping every time I’ve ordered from them.

  3. Great! Just an FYI, if you enter the code SAVE694 at checkout, you get $20 off your first order and free shipping…just did it this morning!

  4. I did this deal a couple weeks ago, and it was fantastic.

The only trouble is now I want to do it again!! If you figure out any great deals without the first time code, I hope you post them!

I had a super busy couple weeks, and even though it felt strange not to be doing deals at the grocery store, it was also pretty great! Btw, have you posted a link to the Emeril ham recipe you use? I tried to find it but I couldn’t.

    • Dana,
Did the $12 show up in the summary at the end or is this something that you get on the final receipt with the BOGO itemization? I tried this and the $12 did not show up .. Shop at Home does not show any code to input so I’m wondering at what point you saw the $12 deduction. THX!!

  5. Safeway.com just informed me that they canceled my order because it wasn’t $50 after the discounts. ๐Ÿ™ Has anyone else had this problem?

      • It’s the first I have heard of it. I have done the Safeway first time order deal twice (one was for my boyfriend) & never paid more than $25 for either one. I would be contacting the store & speaking with the person in charge of .com orders.

        • I brought this up to some other local bloggers. At least one is getting reports of the orders cancelling out too. I am wondering if at this point, Safeway is changing the terms of how the coupon code is to be used.

I will keep you posted if I hear anything.

In the meantime, I’m terribly sorry this didn’t work for you. As you can see in the post above, it worked for me as late as last week!

          • I really do appreciate your taking the time to look into the matter – I was worried it was just me, and maybe I had done something wrong! (I guess, misery loves company ;)).

On a side note, I love your blog, and appreciate ALL the work you do!!!! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • I think they are changing their terms. My order was supposed to be shipped tonight and they sent me an e-mail at 4:30 p.m. stating the final receipt total needed to be over $50.

  6. My order was scheduled for delivery last night and I waited all evening for it to arrive. I checked my junk mail folder this morning and found an email from Safeway that said they cancelled my order because it wasn’t over $50. Bummer ๐Ÿ™

  7. Maybe there’s hope? I received the email, too, and my order was off the Safeway page, but today, the truck came by and I got 2 boxes of chocolates, 2 pies, 2 jars of salsa and 4 boxes of oatmeal for $6.05.
