September in the Garden: The Cutest Watermelon and Kiwi Berries

9/12/17

For the last few years, we’ve managed to head out on vacation in August – exactly when stuff starts happening in the garden! Between our 2-week Colorado vacation and getting the kids back to school, my garden has been in some serious need of TLC.

In spite of my neglect, I have to share this one (tiny!) victory. It’s the first watermelon I’ve successfully grown. And before you knock it, yes, it is supposed to be miniature. Kind of bummed that I only had one fruit and it will pretty much be snack-size, but hey. It’s still a watermelon!

I have a ridiculous amount of weeds and veggies that have gone to seed. I am really, really regretting having EVER planted arugula. (It’s the plant you see in the background with the yellow flowers.) One summer it went to seed and now it pops up EVERYWHERE and the roots are gnarly. Word to the wise: only plant this peppery green if you plan on harvesting it thoroughly. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, allow it to go to seed.

I planted popcorn this year, but now I have no clue what to do with it. Add that to the “YouTube” to-do list.

This is a particularly exciting developing: my kiwi vines have produced a fairly sizeable amount of kiwi berries. However, here’s another instance where I have no clue what to do. I’m thinking I will probably need to harvest them soon and that they probably ripen off the vine, but I’ll likely phone Raintree Nursery later today for advice!

Here’s what I ended up harvesting yesterday: the watermelon, some shallots I’d completely forgotten about, the last of the zucchini, a pumpkin (isn’t it cute?), and one kiwi berry. I’m going to see if I can get it to ripen.

So not a huge harvest this year, but definitely some interesting items that I don’t normally end up with!

How did your garden grow this year? Are you still harvesting fruits or veggies? I’d love to hear about it – leave a comment below!
