I was intrigued about a unique service Staples first introduced last year: it’s called Scan My List. The premise is simple and straightforward. You scan in your child’s school supply list, and Staples will do the shopping for you, placing your items in your online cart. I decided to give this service a try to learn more and share how it works with you. Truth be told, I’d not done any school supply shopping as of this post so I was interested to see if Scan My List could actually save me time as well as money.
Before you get started, you’ll need to gather your child’s school supply list. The photo above is my daughter’s 4th grade list for the fall. (It’s hard to believe she’ll be headed to the 4th grade! Slow down, time!)
Next, you’re going to want to download the Staples app if you don’t have it already. It’s available in the app store for Apple devices.
Within the app, open the chat box and there will be an option for you to scan your list. You can either pull a photo from your albums or take a new photo in the chat. I did this at night, about 10 pm.
The next morning, I had a notification that my cart was ready! Staples had taken the items from my list and added everything to my online cart. You can expect that a Staples associate will fill your cart within 24-48 hours of scanning your list. Since my total was over $49.99, it included free shipping! Alternately, you can opt for in-store pickup. In many cases, your order will be ready for pickup in just one hour. I love that Staples gives you options like these to suit your shopping preferences.
While it would certainly be very convenient to place the order through the app, I also wanted the opportunity to view my cart from a desktop. When I logged into my account at Staples.com from my laptop, there it was! You can easily remove or add items, or change quantities. I was pleased to see that where possible, Staples chose their in-house brands or other low-cost options to fulfill my child’s list.
Sometimes new technologies or services like this can be clunky or miss the mark, but I felt Staples has done an excellent job of making shopping seamless for busy parents. They are committed to sending your kids back to school with confidence. I love that you can cross this task off your “to do” list this summer in very short order, and without having to set foot in a store.
